Google the British Canoe Union or BCU. If you join you get access to canals etc and also insurance.

No worries, we kayak but down in the South West I am afraid. Be very careful with an inflatable, don't go on open seas in it and be very wary of windy days. We have various kayaks and believe me the inflatable is very susceptible to winds and very hard to paddle back in sometimes! It soon gets very tiring.

Don't know about a licence but the Lancaster Canal would be a good one for kayaking. Some lovely scenery, especially up round Garstang, and best of all no locks. I've stayed at Bridge House Marina which is right on the canal and I've seen many kayakers going past.

Join BCU you get a sticker for your boat enabling access to most canals and rivers. Some places you can just use anyway. Google song of the paddle as well.

The BCU as Snowy says is the best bet they also now do a wallet card rather than boat sticker meaning if you have several different Canoe/Kayaks its you and not just one boat that's covered.

I was advised by several people that it was better to have a buoyancy aid type life jacket rather than an inflatable one, not sure why but its cheaper and less heavy so went for that
