Sorry, I don't know that area, so can't give too much advice A lot will depend on what the seabed is like there i.e. sandy, rocky etc.
Do you already do coarse fishing? If so, you could probably get away with using a carp rod and reel, although I have had a good time with cheap rods and reels off Ebay, thus preserving your good stuff. Ideally the rod should be at least 12ft long. Also, IMO, a rod stand tripod is essential when beach fishing. You will probably require 5 or 6oz grip leads and a line of 15-20lb breaking strain. If others are around, it's also wise to use a 50/60lb shock leader line - a 6oz weight will soon snap 20lb line if it snags on the rod rings and you'll have a spiky bomb flying through the air
I would Google local tackle shops and give them a ring - most are really helpful and know the conditions you'll be fishing in.

Before even setting your rod up..I'd have a wee wander round the area at low tide and mark out any gullies between sandbars etc..I'd also be looking for deep water close in..Off rocky outcrops, bottom of cliffs etc.Where you don't need to cast too far to reach fish..Remember if your fishing these kind of places to keep your wits about you, rocks can be covered in spray and be slippy even when dry...And keep an eye on the tide wherever you fish..You don't ever want to be cut off from land(safety)by an incoming tide...Take a selection of baits with you..Rag or Lugworm might work in one place, but not another..Same with squid, mussels, etc..
I'm a course angler mostly, so no expert in shore fishing, but have had a chuck or two on holiday..

Biggest tip I can give is....Enjoy yourself...

Jelboy.

Good advice from Francophile1947,

In addition here is my 2 pence worth,

I have fished Slapton sands many times, it is a very long pebbly beach which slopes quite steeply into the water, so you are fishing into deep water close to the shore (this is good) no rocks or such on the bottom to worry about, no dodgy currents(may be the odd world war 2 tank) a very safe beach.

Late June you have 2 choices, spinning (for mackeral) or fishing the bottom for what ever may be there, as a beginner I would recommend the spinning option, get yourself a 12' spinning rod with a fixed spool reel, 12 to 15lb line will be OK, you will only need a shock leader if you intend to fish the bottom using bigger 4 to 6 oz leads, you will need 3 or 4 packets of mackeral feathers and a few 1 or 2 oz weights.

You're off, tackle up and cast out as far as you can, wait a few seconds then briskly reel in the feathers, if the fish are there you will catch them very quickly, sometimes 6 at a time, boy do they take some pulling in.

Warning - fishing is very much like camping - addictive

PS lidl have just had some idea rod and reel set ups for £20, another £10 for feathers, rigs and weights and you're off.

Nearest fishing shop is Devon Angling Centre in a little village called Chillington thats about 6 miles towards Kingsbridge a very good well stocked shop.

Enjoy.

As I've told my psychiatrist, you can't have too many tents.
