Hi, we are 6 x families going camping May bank holiday. We have a motorhome and the others are in tents. We have chosen a rustic site (Riverside Lakes in Dorset) as we want the children to be children (and not cost us a fortune !). I am hoping they will all be happy on the rope swings, fishing, riding their bikes etc but I want to be prepared in case boredam means they are a pain for others around us !! Can anyone recommend any tried and tested games/activities etc to keep them amused at all please ?

If there's a small stream handy how about a duck race?? 16 yellow plastic ducks numbered 1-16 in a net bag..Each child draws a duck from the bag and the number on the bottom goes against their name on a sheet of paper...Designated start/finish point...Winner gets a small token prize...Net for gathering ducks at the end of the race would be handy!!! As would extra ducks...As adults have been known to want to join in(well on the ones I've been at they do)...........

Its a bit non-camping but all my kids (and many adults I know) love the cardboard box game - basically take a cereal box (a large empty one) and place upright on the floor, everyone takes it in turns yo bend down and pick it in in their mouth (you aren't allowed to touch the floor and have to stand back up with it in your mouth), each time everyone picks it up, you tear off about half an inch off the top of the box and just continue in rounds until the last man standing - it sounds really dull when wrote down but we have never failed to be in hysterics and its good for all ages as the younger children can join in too - my mum normally wins when we're playing cuz she's ultra competetive and has developed techniques lol,!!

A games compendium is a good one as it has so many games in, plus we used it to teach the kids to gamble playing cards one afternoon, using counters and tokens instead of money.

Another version of the duck race is to have a paper boat race. We spent one wet afternoon making and decorating the paper boats. We then raced them down the river the next day. Adds a bit more excitement as some boats will sink and if any do get away at the end they will just decompose

How about walkie talkies, my daughter and her friends have them, they can play around the site in the woods even when dusk sets.
