Hi,
can any one recommend a site next to a river where we can drop our canoes in please. We are complete beginners so no white watery stuff just a nice gentle river. Anywhere around East Midlands (Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Leicestershire) areas.
thank you x
Holme pierpont Nottingham . Natianal water sports centre . Camping and caravanning very close . Really easy to put in and out on the Trent . As you go in to the centre follow the signs for the White water centre . First big gravel carpark on left in the corner there's a slipway and pontoon for the rowing teams perfect access toilets and cafe round the corner at white water centre . Quite an easy paddle up to Nottingham . Theres allso a good paddle up river from Gunthorpe . Were are you based ?
Hi,
we are from mansfield, we've only just bought the canoes (2nd hand, off ebay) and we have no way of transporting them anywhere except inside the caravan, so thats why we'd like a campsite next to a river. Gunthorpe sounds perfect!
thanks Rob
Have you a grand plan or just trying it and see were it takes you . ? Chesterfield canals good ! Northen end up near Retford . Drakeholes it's called there's a site in-between drakehole and Retford next to canal . It's a good section 12 miles with no locks .

what type of canoe is it a open canoe or is it a kayak
also if your new i would at least recommend you go to a local club for a few lessons, more inexperienced paddlers get into trouble quite easy. i dont want to alarm you just let you know ;-)P

Hi,
yes we have Helmets, Buoyancy aids e.t.c. Not sure whether they are kayaks or canoes though, ones a Dagger Crossfire, the other one is a Eskimo Gambler. Had a few goes in a canoe years ago, it's all coming back, put flat part of stick in water, canoe moves, simple lol.
Kayaks . Pleasley canoe club could be usefull . Peakoutdoors . On old mill lane industrial estate has a good selection of kayak canoe gear . If your interested we . Me an OH could get you on Trent . We've got touring seakayaks . . So the trents good training flow wise .
Let me know how you get on ?

Its also worth checking if you need a local water authority toll licence for your canoes, being caught without one in some areas can be a very expensive mistake indeed.
I second the advice above regards joining a club, also about buying and wearing a good life jacket, as much an essential piece of kit as the canoe itself.

Make sure you fit air bags in the back so if you capsize is does not all fit with water and is alot easer to empty and i would have a go at a capsize so you know you can getout and known what to do .Just have fun and be safe on the water, you will soon get the bug and will want to move on to the white water
