I know there are a few other threads on this but I'm still a bit confused. sorry if the questions are a bit basic!
I've tried using my car satnav but it's battery is flat in 5 mins and it is only good on roads! We don't currently have a mobile that could do the job. So my dilemma is: upgrade the phone to something with gps, or get a handheld gps just for geocaching. I'd really like a map to follow, but looks like some gps don't have them, just an arrow to follow? How do people find that works for them?
the phone idea first..which ones can be used, and which are good?
With handheld gps, I'm happy to write down coordinates ad take them with me, dont need to download- can anyone suggest some options.
We're only just starting with geocaching so really don't want to spend much on something we may not use very often.
Thanks for any help!

To be honest a car sat nav is useless for caching. We use a Garmin Oregon 300. Nowadays maps are easy to get & download, just have a look on the Groundspeak forums & search "toasty Talky" maps.

As for a gps to use forcaching have a look on E Bay, you can pick up a quite cheaply.

We only do "paperless" caching these days, can't be bothered faffing about with co - ordinates on bits of paper.

I also have an iPhone that I use on occasions, but like you car sat nav, caching just eats the battery power & will only work where there is a good 3G coverage

In my opinion a stand alone gps is the way to go, & once you start you won' be stopping :-)

Hi Kate

Take a look at this link

http://www.memory-map.co.uk/mobile/

In the process of setting up my new gps I discovered I could have put this software on my phone! I don think it has all the features but maybe it's what your looking for?
