Assume it will be either mild and wet or cold and dry. Both need good waterproofs and walking boots. Even if you don't intend to do any high walking (not advisable unless you've done it before in winter) you can still do plenty of low level walks around the various lakes.Good jumpers and warm vests etc. Hip flask would be ideal.Don't forget the towels for the dogs.If it gets very wet you might want to take coats for the dogs as well. We've been there when it was minus 10 and when it was balmy at plus 10, both in Jan. Enjoy it.

Be careful which car parks you use. Don't use any Lake District National Park Authority car parks. They are operated by Parking Eye. When you get home you may just find a ticket asking for money. Steer clear of Grassmere

If you are not sure what to take......go with an open mind to GAYNOR SPORTS in Ambleside. Fantastic shop with knowldgeable assistants. YOu can always look on their website.

My advise would be take layers. We alway take running vest s withlong sleeves, a middle layer (Cotton Traders polo neck),then a wind proof jacket. I recently bought a fab jacket:the North Face...really light weight but it does the job.

You'll need walking boots or a something between a trainer and walking boots.

A full set of waterproofs is essential.

I love the Lakes, we recently sepnt our 20th anniversary in the Langdales itwas lovely...very wet but lovely.
