I'm glad you did as its answered a few questions for me, I do have another one also tho..... Does anyone ask when your out "what are you doing?" as in your looking dodgy. And also if its in a public place how do you try and look without being noticed, and having the people ask.
------------- Visit Llandrindod Wells! Great scenery, walks, cycling, red kites. Ideal for exploring Mid Wales.
Keigcf, Non-Geocachers are known as 'Muggles'. Those innocent people who forever seem to be exactly where you want to look. As for looking dodgy, quite a few have been asked by the Police what they're up to. Can look a bit shady . Public places??? They're everywhere, every Town City, Park, you name it but all very cleverly hidden, sometimes in open view? Sometime virtual as in 'no container but a plaque, statue inscription etc. Two examples: Know of one in the grounds outside Salisbury Cathedral which gives as a clue, part of the inscription. You get to read the rest to complete and claim the cache. A simple but effective container cache is under a well used bench on the seafront at Saundersfoot. A magnetic container. Difficult to explain what you're up to if there's someone sitting there and you cannot look for it until they're gone. Lot of hanging about on times. If people ask, just lie
I know the children would love it, they were thrilled finding the one last week (but hadn't taken a pencil to write our name with so had to go back again!) its just if there are people around, it may be embarressing

You just get used to looking dodgy! If we are asked we normally say treasure hunting, or we tell the truth, have got a lots people into geocaching this way.
We use talky toaster maps, absolutely brilliant. Just found our 1350th cache since last June, can you tell we love it.
I love to see families out caching with the kids, what a brilliant way of having quality family time outdoors. Enjoy your new hobby/obsession!
My user name on geocaching is 2 DG's if you want to know anymore you can always email me through there. One hint though, make sure your user name is short, you will be writing it lots and on tiny bits of paper, you can always change it if you have already picked one
Asked my Wife about what she tells people (I just drive her to places cos I can't get around as much as I'd like any more) and she says the same as Debs, Internet treasure hunting or the truth and then a long conversation about Geocaching. You will often find other strange people hanging about for the same reason as you. I got her a Geocaching T shirt so it cuts out a lot of that. Ruth, my Wife, is the Geocacher and I'm the Geocaching Widower. Works for me
Just wish it had been around when the Kids were small.
Well I was going to try a free app on son's phone this last weekend, as there are a few nearby according to geocaching.com, and my internet went down!! A nice engineer has just been and replaced my hub, so hopefuuly will try this next weekend. Thanks for the helpful hints all
I've tried Geocaching a few times but my phone only gets me to about 2-3 meters away before the battery dies. which is a good handheld GPS receiver to use,
I mainly want to do this for the exercise aspect as just walking is boring.
I have a garmin Dakota 10, one of the cheaper ones but it does everything I need, can download free maps, and I found 75 with it this weekend and walked 25 miles without getting lost!
