Hi everyone

This is our first time camping ever !! And I was wondering if anyone had any great ideas/tips to keep them entertained. Im not completely stupid and know the obvious things .. just wondered if any regular campers had any good ideas.

Also weve packed things like swing ball, tennis rackets, kites, bug boxes, football, space hoppers and scooters !!!

Are these enough or am I being naive ??

Any advice would be great xxxx

Hello! I'm sure you've thought about it but we always pack a wet weather bag with cards a chess set and top trumps. Sometimes we take stickers, paper and pens. We usually take a board game for night times too!

As our two have grown up a bit (8&9 now) they're more interested in finding people to play with. Last weekend they had great fun building dens!

Happy Camping!

The Nayional Trust are running a programme of "101 things to do before you are 11 3/4" which has some good ideas for outdoor things to do for a range of ages. You can get a booklet from them or look on their website. Some are really simple (like "climb a tree") some are things I wouldn't have thought of for myself (like go for a walk barefooted) but most are free, and can be done anywhere, not just at NT properties. We've done several this summer.

Oh and I always do a search for events before we go camping! It's amazing sometimes what you can find without it costing you a fortune.

We've started to get National Trust membership they often run activities for the kids, treasure hunts and crafts etc. And as GarnetLiz has said the 101 things to do!

English Heritage often have re-enactments. Trains are another favorite (altho expensive)holiday treat!

tennis rackets not a good idea as you can give a tennis ball a big old whack ! too many expensive cars to damage

badmington is much better !

frisbee is good if you have the room - again can cause damage to cars if yer not careful

and the sticky velcro ball and pad catch things are always good.

Another vote for geocache, just been with a few kids at home and they loved it. Will be doing a bit more in the future and definitely on our camping trips!

Some ideas we use

- colour book and pencils
- geocaching again
- mini bowls sets
- Swingball
- sticky velcro ball thing again
- look up local activities
- Walks
- cycling
- den building
- help cooking eg pancake making, banana chocolate on bbq
- skipping rope
- painting nails
- cricket/rounders (if open space available)
- nearest cinema on really rainy day
- nearest swimming pool on really rainy day
- pack of cards
- fruit picking
- water guns if again open space allows
- helping collect wood and build fire depending if site allows
- pond dipping/crabbing?

I am sure you have thought of lots of these anyway. Anymore good idea's appreciated!

It's treasure hunting with a GPS unit or a GPS enabled smartphone. Have a look here, but beware, it is addictive. Geocaching 101

We took our three year old twins camping 6 weeks ago for the first time and it was amazing! We took loads of toys etc "just in case" but didn't need them as they easily made friends with other kids on the site and we relaxed the rules a bit and let them play with the other kids around the pitch! Amazing the games they make up! We took them again for the last week of the school holidays and the same thing happened then :)

Have a great time!!
