Hi
would like to join a rambling group, walk a lot by my self.
But I need to replace my walking foot wear with something decent but not to expensive, are there any recomends for somewhere with decent choice and good advice, as I have arthritus in feet.
Am in the Bolton area and will travel out to get the right ones.
Thank in advance

I used to wear walking boots in the price range of 30-40 GBP purchased from a Regetta outlet, and they were fine for short trips.
I then invested on a pair of Salomon Quest 4D GTX boots from Go Outdoors, and was amazed by the difference in comfort when I was trying them on in the store that I overlooked they were half a size too small (it is advisable to get boots half a size bigger than normal for the feet to expand).
A good outdoor equipment shop will have a selection of walking boots/shoes for you to try on.
Take your time and walk around the shop, up and down the slope if provided indoors like GO.

I highly recommend a visit to Costwolds, they have a great range and very well trained boot fitters. I needed a new pair last year and they took about 5 different measurements from each foot, looked at how I walked and what I needed from a boot before recommending several to me to try. They also have a funny rocky slope thing you can walk on to feel how the boots fit when walking on uneven ground and up/down hill. Finally when I went back after the first use of the boots they sorted a slight movement at the heels with a special wedge lift that fits under the insole -free of charge! My walking boots are now more comfortable than my slippers.
Maybe not the cheapest place to go but there is nothing worse than badly fitting walking boots which in my experience end up costing you more in the long run as you just don't get the wear out of them.
if you join the Ramblers you get a discount voucher for 15% off - may be worth waiting until that arrives to actually purchase your boots (thin it was for Cotswold) you also get 10% off at Millets and Blacks as a rambler
Most good boot suppliers will let you return boots if you have only worn them inside and found them unsuitable. So whatever you chose ask this question and if you have time wear them round the house a bit in case they are not right
