GCMS2012 head into the market square and there is an information centre where you can get a lot of free leaflets etc for whats on around the area, have been many times to the lakes and especially Keswick it is a good base to move around from either by foot, car and buses enjoy
Can only do 'light' walking now... She's been diagnosed with possible 'ankylosing spondylitis', so hills and big walks are out of the question, but gentle flat walks shouldn't be a problem.
So, any idea how long it would take to walk around Derwent water - if it's not too hilly? That sounds another good thing to do...
Everyone so far has just banged on that Keswick itself is fantastic!
Whoever told you about the Dog and Gun is right...great pub and good ales, and yes the Market is good too, lots of really nice wooden and slate craft stuff on sale. Try the pencil museum too, nice things to buy there... Lovely town.
GCMS2012 if you want a really nice and mostly flat and you have a car, drive down the honister pass to lake buttermere that is a lovely walk, Ambleside is a bit commercial but there are some flat walks around that area and some good pubs and from Keswick you could catch the bus, walking round derwent water can be awkward in places if you are not good on the pins, enjoy the lakes we love it there been many years on the trot.
Borrowdale. Opposite Derwent water itself is a flat walk I believe it was called the3 Allendale walk. But it s smallish hill up to the actual walk or from the other end of D.Water we parked and was able to go right along at the bottom of what is called cat bells you will not be able to climb that. But I can be pushed in a wheelchair along the walk. Take a flask, sarnie and something to sit on and take it steady and enjoy.
Some has mentioned the Buttermere.
But Tarn How is a beautiful walk going round and taking it gently. Again taking refreshment with you. Just go at your own pace. You can always turn back it needs be.
GCMS2012 that's what you should have told your boss beautiful part of the country, keswick, whatlandath, ambleside and borrowdale are my favourite places apart from getting on top of the mountains

We can no longer do the walking we used to but what lovely memories we have of using the then fortnights holiday every year either clambering up the lower part of Bow fell on the Band and just sitting there with the flask and sarnies. Every other day we climbed the fells and the in-between days was flat walks from Chapel stile where we camped and walked to Ambleside or up & over the Blea Tarn at the back of the farm. Went round the area by car this year and sat and remembered what we used to get up to. A dearly missed life. But plenty of memories.
You will love it.It so natural and beautiful. Check camp sites around. The one we saw we used to camp on is Chapel Stile 4 miles north of Ambleside. Lovely walk by the river leading to the Langdale Arms public house.
