If you are at Charmouth places like Corfe and Swanage are quite a drive. We stayed at Corfe and drove to Charmouth two years ago. last year we went to the C&CC site at Moreton as it is a bit more central for visiting east and west dorset
Thanks Purplebean. We don't mind a longer drive on two or three days. It's a long way from home anyway (as you will know being a fellow West Yorkshirian!!) so we are willing to go a bit further to explore the area if there is something worth seeing.
Now you are about two years too early me thinks as they are trying to build a huge JUrassica on the Portland bill in a quarry with 16 million pounds of lottery money. That will be fantastic. Go to Shell bay and look for fossils, walk to old Harry rocks. pushchairs Ok to there. Go on the swanage steam railway, and on the chain ferry across Sandbanks harbour. Lovely childrens playgrounds around Poole
Boscombe near Bournemouth. Has a lovely pier with musical instruments on it to be played by anyone. Beach is nice and sandy too. Parked in the town in residential roads and walked down (steeply down hill) through Boscombe Gardens (or park)and there in a play park with water pumps for children to channel water, pump it and play with new friends they met less than 1 minute ago! Mine at 9,7 and 3 really enjoyed it.
we went to dorset last year with our (then) 8, 6, 3 and 1 year old. We went to some brilliant places: the tank museum, Kingston lacy (national trust), the keep military museum (free), and montacute house (again national trust):) all brilliant :)

I know it's not strictly Dorset but what about the Donkey Sanctuary in Sidmouth? We've stayed at Charmouth (Seadown campsite) and travelled to the Donkey Sanctuary from there.
Admission is free but they invite you to make a donation
