My wife and I take several city breaks each year across Europe. No hire car, just a city centre apartment and lots of walking ...mostly getting lost.

Does anyone have advice on purchasing a hand held gps ?

We have seen the garmin ones being used by hikers on the wilderness but would like to know what model is best for use in city centres and do they have sound on them like the car models?

Would also like to use it on my motorcycle - making the most of it and keeping costs down :)

Coincidentally I was thinking of getting a hand held gps so I don't get lost on the many walks I do when camping. I don't know anything about them and can't afford a lot so I also would be interested in any info/advice.

If you have a smart phone you can probably find a mapping app, the gps used by hikers are expensive and only the dearest have OS maps.

Map Compass. We cycled round the world and only used maps and a compass. For a city break i would just use a smart phone app. We do have a Garmin GPS for Seakayaking but to be honest the battery does not last long so i only use it to confirm position speed etc then switch it off.

I don't know how much the Oregon 600 is but the garmin Montana 600 also doubles as a car sat nav and you can get free footpath maps for it for all over the world

If you have a smart phone with inbuilt GPS, Memorymap - OS maps down to 1:25k in HD, depneding on what you sign up for. It's a heck of a lot cheaper than a GPSR unit
