I know it might be a big mistake but seeing as though I have never stopped in Essex (only drove past as fast as possible to get to Kent or France) I decided to book a break at the end of May in Clacton.

This is for myself, girlfriend and two dogs and we are mid 40's and early 50's.

Can anyone tell me what, in that area, is good to visit and see, whether for walks with the dogs or historic things to see.

Coming from oooop Norf where we can get out into the countryside or beach in minutes have I made a mistake or is there anything at all of interest down there?

Will I have to buy a pair of white stilettos and learn to totter about on them and dance around a handbag or is that just the females?

We liked the area around Maldon. A few miles away, the area around Danbury looks good for walks but we didn't get there.

Danbury Common is quite hilly (for Essex)

You can look at the south of the county, Paglesham, Canewdon Wallasea etc are wonderful marshland areas. Burnham is a great yachting centre. The Woodhams are a group of small to large villages worth a visit.
Billericay (the Mayflower and all that), the Hanningfields with the large reservoir, Hyde Hall the RHS centre at Latchingdon and so on.
Get down as far as Leigh on sea and I might even sell you a cup of tea.

We live just down the road from Danbury Common and is a great place for dog walking (but you do have to pay to park in Danbury woods). It's a bit of a drive from Clacton just to walk dogs though.

Thaxted, Finchingfield, Great Dunmow and around that area is nice.

Essex is a lovely place it has nice people great pubs and cold beer and theres loads to do too, but unfortunately I cant tell you about it as youre a Yorkshireman and if you knew how good it is here you may not want to go home

Yorkshireman ???? YORKSHIREMAN ??? Always thought you lot did not know how to read maps of God's Country up north.
You have to travel into and BACK OUT of Yorkshire to get up to where I live.
I live in the Land of the Prince Bishops.


This expedition to the strange place of Essex is just a one off as never been before and our real holiday is in July up in the true God's country of Scotland in a log cabin with sauna and hot tub. Hotel there but no mobile phone signal and wifi just in the Hotel Reception ..... bliss. Just walking the dogs, relaxing, eating.

Leccy, we have always had, it is a proper gas supply that was a more recent invention in some of the villages up here.
I remember my parents village not having gas until the late 1980's despite having a mains running through the top of the village.

Now with leccy, we are the home of the inventor of the Electric Light bulb (Joseph Swan) and his house was the first in the country to have electric lights.
We are also have the first house in the world to have been powered by hydro electricity (Cragside)

Thanks all for your suggestions, will make sure my passport is up to date ....... no not to get down there but to make sure I can get back up to civilisation.

I have visited Essex once as a friend of mine lives there and I must say I found it quite charming. No more white heeled ladies teetering about than elsewhere in the UK.

The OP obviously hasn't been down the Big Market in Newcastle on a Friday night! They're in Co Durham - even in the old days Co Durham didn't stretch as far north as Cragside. Like someone in Essex boasting about something in Suffolk

As a northerner myself I was pleasantly surprised by Essex. Battlesbridge Antiques Centre was also a good visit
