try a few on in as many shops as you have time for - try walking up slopes if you can and check they don't squash your toes.
my best boots were £20 in tkmaxx (leather hi-tec ones) - it's down to luck really. I've never had any from Mountain Warehouse and have heard karrimor have been taken over by Sports Direct and are not now so well thought of - but I had a pair of karrimor boots which were fine
if you have a tkmaxxx nearby it might be worth going in as often as you can as their stock changes regularly but you could be really lucky and get a good bargain

Take a trip to somewhere like Go outdoors or Cotswold,
they will advise on different types of boots.
It depends on what type of terrain you need them for,
vibram soles are lethal on wet rock.
At the moment i am using Berghaus Expeditors,300 plus mountain miles and still going strong.
Going to somewhere like tk max or even sports direct will limit your choice. And staff with a very limited knowledge of products.

I have tried many different types of walking boot/ trainers and have come to realise that i'm a hi-tec 'fit'. I can and have bought them off the shelf and then proceeded to complete a 15 mile walk the next day in them.....i know, totally not what folk recommend.
I have found a couple of great on line suppliers that tend to do great deals also.

I thought I was a hi tec fit as the ones from tkmaxx were so comfortable but I got a pair of lighter ones off e-bay and they are much tighter :( not comfortable at all
