Does anyone know of any places between Barmouth and Harlech where I can get some nice photos? I'm planning a day out during my next camping trip - my goal is Harlech castle but I don't want to miss out on any possible photo opportunities en route, though as time will be limited I don't want to stray too far from the main A496. So, any suggestions anyone?

Hi Eunice, you say you don't want to stray very far, but the Dysynni Valley is well worth it if you get the chance, you have the ruined Welsh castle, Castell-y Bere, Craig yr Adern or Bird Rock where cormorants breed, the church at Lanfihangel-y-Pennant and lovely scenery. You could also take a trip on the Talyllyn Railway in the next valley and get off at Dolgoch Falls.
There is also a very minor road which goes east from Lanbedr and ends up at Cwm Bychan, a favourite place of mine since the age of 11.
To Anne's suggestions for places south of Barmouth I'd add Aberdyfi as well as Fairbourne (mainline train, or narrow gauge train plus passenger ferry, or footpath including rail bridge, or road toll bridge connections to Barmouth).
North of Barmouth, there's also a minor road west from Llanbedr which passes the airfield and ends at the causeway to Shell Island, which I imagine you've heard of.
Day visits are possible but (at this time of year) seem to cost as much as a night's camping.
Just north of the Artro estuary you might find Llandanwg's medieval church of interest.
And lots of photo opportunities of (and from) Harlech Castle, of course!
Nantcol waterfalls, llanbedr, very near to Cwm Bychan that Anne has mentioned. Lovely scenery all around that area, especially if you travel up into the hills.

I went there at Easter Bob, there's naff-all there and I wasn't impressed - it seemed a long drive for a lot of nothing The weather didn't help though, it was a very grey, damp and windy day, but even in nice weather there'll still be nothing there so I don't think I'd be in a rush to ever go back there.
I did think about Shell Island, went there for a day visit years ago so I know you have to pay - depends on how many arms and legs it would cost me
