I can strongly recommend seeing the Galloway Hoard exhibition while it’s at Kirkcudbright (until July 2022, then to Aberdeen). It’s visiting from the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh. Fascinating, beautiful, intriguing, thought provoking. Excellent use of QR codes so you can download a 3D photo, and rotate it to see the detail at the back of the object - silver brooch, golden bird pin etc. Informative & interesting videos about restoring the items. Photography allowed. Free, but you must book your entry time via the gallery website or at the door. We’ll be going back to see it again. Good local sites to stay at too. Kirkcudbright is “the artists town” and lovely place to visit, with an active harbour, the National Trust for Scotland’s Hornell House and connections with Jessie King & the Glasgow Boys.

Ooh, I think that might have made the decision for me of where to go on a spring holiday! Thanks for posting it. I love a bit of Viking silver, me...

I can wholeheartedly recommend Garlieston Lodge a Camping and Caravanning club CS about 12 miles away. We’ve just got back from there where we took refuge so our dogs didn’t have to undergo the stress of Fireworks. The Scots are far too canny to put thousands of pounds worth of ordnance up into the sky. Think of them as very generous Yorkshiremen!

Lovely area - the weather was a bit blowy and dreechit as the locals described it!. Pub in the village was dog friendly and did good food at a reasonable price. Campsite owner Rusty, is a motorhomer so its well laid out and designed for campers, Happy days,

He keeps rare breed pigs and hens so plenty of pork and fresh eggs available.

Best Regards

Dreich is an excellent word & apt for earlier this week. Glad you had a quiet non-fireworks stay. Glorious sun now! Arran is pin sharp.
Garlieston Lodge site is ok, no views of the bay but good coastal walks in both directions. For seeing the Hoard, I hold with my suggestion of Silvercraigs at Kirkcudbright as it’s just a short walk away & is also open all year, good local dog walks too. We drove from Garlieston CAMC site to stay at Kirkcudbright & it takes longer than you think it will.

Last time I went up to that area I stayed at Drumroamin - lots of space, nice flat pitches, clean facilities, dark skies - which is a bit of a trundle from Kirkcudbright, but prowling the countryside is part of the fun of being up there.

Indeed, that’s a good site too, has won an award or two; much more open views than Garlieston Lodge plus dog walks from the site.
My opinion is probably different from someone with a caravan or tent ie driving a car: more nippy than a MH on Galloway’s somewhat bendy rolling roads, and more suited to exploring to find towers & standing stones & hidden coves.
If I was based in that general area with a car, I’d be radiating out to Logan Botanics, Portpatrick, Glentrool for walking round the Merrick, Kirroughtree, Cally Palace gardens, and so a day trip to Kirkcudbright & Castle Douglas would fit in. Maybe even as far as our favourite area at Kippford and Rockcliffe. With a MH, we find it’s easier & less driving to just move to a nearer site.

Isle of Whithorn is also a very pleasant and historically interesting place to visit and I'd certainly go back there if I visited the area again. Mind you I probably wouldn't be as lucky with the weather - sun was cracking the flags last time I was there!

There are a few free Motorhome parking spots in Kirkcudbright near the park.

If you’re talking of the 3 pitches by the swimming pool & park, with EHU, water & CDP, they are NOT free. They’re put there by the community-run organisation that operates the Silvercraigs site & puts the profit into running the swimming pool. All 3 hard stands were occupied a few weeks ago & they all displayed the ticket in the window to show they’d paid at the Swimming Pool.
There are parking spaces over on the other side of the park that don’t have a “no overnight parking” sign, and there was a campervan there. Just standard parking places, however, not specifically for MHs; popular with dog walkers.
