Hi guys,

I know a few of you are into geocaching and I have been looking into it (www.geocaching.com). I think I could be interested in having a go at this (and even better, my wife is very interested in it too).

Could someobody recommend a cheap hand held GPS receiver that would be up to the job, please ? And with any Pros/Cons.

The basic is the yellow Garmin Etrex which i think they are stopping making so you will pick up a bargain out there! They are in the argos book but you could do an web search for cheaper ones. Had mine a few years now and theres nowt to go wrong with them and will get you to the all important cache find with ease! Its waterproof which is a bonus! Use rechargable batteries as they last longer.

Im QUEENY if you fancy doing any of my caches ;-)

Check out www.globalpositioningsystems.co.uk

You don't need anything more than a Yellow eTrex for geocahcing, although getting the PC link cable as well is a good move for transfering waypoints.

Yep, I have to agree with my fellow geocachers...Yellow Etrex from Garmin is perfectly adequate, you can pick them up for as little as £65ish if you shop around.  As you get into the hobby you may wish to upgrade, colour screens, integrated mapping are all available for a price.  If you already have a Satnav that you can input your own POIs into you may not need a GPS at all.

Whatever you decide the guys over on GC.com are always very helpful and far more technically minded than me...have fun.

Crikey that was quick!!! Takes a wee while to figure it all out (well, it did for me!) but its a style icon too ;-) Dont forget to get rechargables...almost got to a caches site last month....and the unit went dead... :(  Groundspeak has a UK forum for any advise and ideas. As someone else mentioned...get a etrex data cable for the pc. you can dowload your co-ords straight into the etrex in a second!!!!!!!!!

If your interested there is a pinned topic at the top of GC's UK forum, Adopt a Newbie. Where experienced cachers will arrange to take a New cacher out on a days caching, showing them the ropes. There's quit a few in your area.

If your free in the evening on the 23rd and don't mind travelling into Chester. There's the Big Move Cache Event by Hazels. You'll find a big welcome off all of us.

Hi again guys thanks for all the comments.

I ordered it yesterday afternoon with next day delivery, it arrived about an hour ago. I haven't had a chance to play with it yet.

I needed it in a hurry as we are going away (camping) on Saturday until after the Bank holiday. We're hoping to do a bit while we are away... and maybe find some caches too . I've got a couple of days to try it out and there is a cache only half a mile away to test it on (A Ferry Fine Fiddler Mk2)

Thanks for the invite, Davep .... I've never been adopted before  ....  unfortunatley I am away with the family when the cache event is on

Good luck with your finds mate don't be put off if you get any DNF's (Did Not Find). On my first outing I found 2, DNF on 1 and got soaked to the skin. But best of all I had a ball .

And now for a shameless plug I've a CITO event (Cache In Trash Out) on the 15 of July at Greenfield Heritage Park in Hollywell, and attending means you get a CITO icon as well.(well this is not the GC forum so cache plugging is allowed )

Well I found my first geocache this morning on the way to work !!! woooohooooo http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=2e3da7dc-6164-4942-9d15-8858a4fc8fe1     My handle is F1rst_Timer.

A little too easy really. I was surprised that the GPSr took me right to it. It read "2ft to go", and there was it's hiding place 2 feet in front of me. I don't expect I'll have this much luck on future hunts ..... can't wait to do more.

Davep:- I do on-call for work every other week/weekend due to long term sickness at the moment and unfortunately that is one of my weekends too. Could you explain about the CITO icon ?

Congratulations on your first find mate (word of warning once you get to 10 your hooked for life ). As to icons if you have a look in your profile you'll find a page for found/placed. You'll see (once you've got a few different types found) a break down of the different types of cache by type. Traditional, Multi,Puzzle, Event and CITO, each one has it's own icon, when you looked on the closest to home page you'll have seen the same icons. TB's (tractable items) and Geocoins also have their own icons as well.

If you fancy doing some caches in North Wales give me a shout, there's a child friendly Multi in the Sand Dunes near where I live, which I had fun watching a fellow cacher who posts on this forum actually fail to find part 1 until it was pointed out to him . That reminds me I better get it back out and active again .
