..............or are you talking of leaving your touring caravan on a site as a seasonal, that is leaving your touring caravan on the same site for about 9 months?

I'm looking for somewhere I can leave it for a longer period than 9 months - infact, if I find the right place I'm hoping years. It's a static caravan so I don't want to have to move it all the time.

Can you recommend anywhere?

Thanks

Zoe

Most static holiday sites have a 9 month or 10.5 month licence, e.g. open from March to mid Jan. They are not residential and so you pay only a minimal council tax to cover rubbish collection etc.

You leave your caravan there during the closed period and in most cases can have daytime access to it if needed for any repairs but you cannot stay overnight.

Sites open 52 weeks a year are normally residential and attract a higher council tax.

I don't know of any "holiday" parks open all year around.

Update: I saw a TV report on holiday homes this week and there was reference to some static holiday parks now having an all-year licence, no info on cost implication were given so would need more investigation.

I'm not sure I like the idea of year round licences for holiday parks. You'll get people finding ways to live on them all year round, and that then starts to erode the holiday atmosphere.

We've recently bought a static caravan and found some of the sites we visited very offputting for precisely that reason.  The sites with lots of pitches where people were living most of the year looked cluttered, scruffy and downbeat. It was also very obvious that people were finding it hard to sell on their caravans on these sites.

We've chosen a site with a three month closed period. That's when the owner in his own words "tackles major maintenance and new projects" which keeps the site fresh and interesting". Personally that's what I want for my money.

Ours is inland not near a surfing beach so not the sort of thing you would be looking for I imagine.

I think you will run into certain difficulties with trying to put a static caravan onto a new site. Some of the sites (ours included) do not allow re-siting of second hand vans. They want only brand new ones brought on (again it keeps the site looking upbeat).

So, first you have to find a site which allows re-siting. Then you have to decide whether its really the one for you. There's no substitute for travelling to the area you really like then footslogging around them all I'm afraid. That's what we did over several weekends. Its really tiring but you can't make up your mind from looking at websites, brochures, or from other peoples recommendations. Websites in particular can be SO misleading as many of them are made up of generalised pictures of caravans, woodland, beaches etc and when you get there are not actually photos of that site at all! We're quite picky and if we drove up and found a scruffy sign at the site entrance and a run down, disorganised office building, we just drove away. There's no way we would be paying our site fees to that kind of outfit.

That said, everyone's different. If your absolute priority is to be able to surf and you find a site right next to a wonderful surfing beach, you may not be bothered at all about the general appearance of the site or the facilities, and it may well be that you could find a place like that where like minded surfers gather with only the sport in mind and where the site owner simply facilitates them in doing that.

Good luck in your search.

I do know of a caravan site which is open from the 1st March till 31st October. Its a site for static caravans and you leave your caravan on all year round even when closed. It is located nearish to Blackpool about 20 mins away. There is a beach but not really for surfing. And they accept second hand caravans.

Kind Regards

We have our static in the Gower. Excellent surf beaches. Hill End site is right on the beach at llangennith. I doubt many sites would let you take your own van onto site though. Lots of sites do business with the local static caravan seller. Blackhills sell vans and also broughton caravans.

You won't find a static caravan pitch to rent....the site owners want to sell you the van that's already sited on the pitch and are not interested in re-siting second hand vans.  I think you will also be very unpleasantly surprised as to how much it will cost you to move the thing anyway by transporter.

As well as selling you the van on it's pitch, they will also want a pitch fee for the whole  year in advance, you will have to sign a contract (which you need to read carefully) and unless you are prepared to pay mega bucks, you will not find a year round site.  They are then classed as residential and full Council Tax etc becomes payable.   Most people living most of the year in their vans have to spend 2-3 months in the Winter staying with family and honestly, that's probably a good thing as living in a van in the depths of winter is no fun.  Static vans are built for warmer weather, certainly not when temp. drops below freezing.

Costal sites are rarely open for 12 months of the year - only park home sites where most of the residents are retired and have paid thousands for their mobile homes.
