im not sure there is a 'best' manufacturer - all sites that sell new vans will have their own preference, usually determined by PRICE they can buy at.
The two we've owned (and shipped out to France) were a 2001 cosalt rimini - which was and still is in fantastic condition and a 2014 ABI Tebay Platinum which has everything we need and more besides and is a quality build
as you're already aware of the pitfalls of buying a static in the UK, try to visit a few sites and stay for a night or two and while you're there speak to as many owners as you can, we all like to chat about how good or bad our van is in terms of design, tweaks, changes that we've made etc.
its a massive financial investment with very little capital return, so don't be in a rush, take your time and view as many sites and vans as you can !
i agree with the previous comment re french windows/patio doors on the front. they prob work well when overlooking a great view, but impact massively on the layout. i don't think you can beat wrap around lounge with dining area (bench seats and stools) in one corner, open kitchen (not a galley kitchen) and enough bedrooms to save you making up temp beds ever night. ours also has small ensuite to the master but its a very tight squeeze and im not sure its a practical solution, but the boss likes it - so thats all that matters .......
