About time VAT was introduce onto static caravans that are purchased for holiday purposes and not permanent residential. Seems unfair that we have to pay VAT on our touring caravan, but Joe Bloggs who has bought a static for holiday purposes does pay VAT on his luxury item! I will not be signing any petition!
thats a bit harsh? is there a class war about to break out?
David - that would depend on if the sites local council let a site change! On our park we have both and its 2 seperate licenses so if we lost statics it does not mean we can automatically change those pitches to touring!

There is a logic to charging VAT on all caravans (if VAT is to be charged), but around here the argument is not so much against the concept of VAT, nor a "class war", it's about the time. In these austere times everyone is pushed. We are constantly reminded that we need "growth" in the economy to get us out of what is now a double dip recession etc etc. 95% of all statics sold i nthe UK are made i nthe Uk and 95% of those are made here i nthe east Riding. Why threaten jobs, manufacturing etc at this time in our economic history? Put loads out of work and that in itself has a knock on effect on the local economy with less money in circulation.
Don't focus on the concept of VAT on caravans, consider the lives of individuals, local ecomonies, etc.
In the same area as the manufacturers of caravans we have the prospect in East Yorkshire of BAE closing down and that's another fair few hundred out of work. Just so badly timed has anyone thought it through?

anyone got any idea on how many new statics are bought each year? from what i understand about vat - which can be written on a postage stamp - i thought that vat can be claimed back by commercial/industry 'sellers' - so it wont cost them anything extra (i am thinking of the site operators and sellers) - but the end buyer will be the one that actually incurs the vat. so i wonder if the 30% reduction in sales will be the end user with the other 70% of sales being site operators etc, so the actual amount raised will be virtually zero but the effect on the industry might actually cost more in unemployment payouts?
If this weather continues, there may well be the same scenario as happened in 2000. On the site of 300 van I was on at that time, over 290 (including mine) were flooded. In this case, of course, the VAT will mainly be paid by the Insurance companies as many people insure "new for old". It took from October to the following June for the manufacturers to build enough new vans to fulfill the orders.
No final decision has yet been taken on the imposition of VAT. When they do they may put it on and perhaps may be even earlier than expected. Who knows?

Today Willerby Caravans announced the 90 day redundancy notice period which indicates that around half the workforce could be made redundant if the VAT proposals go ahead. It's started then....

I think that you will find that Willerby has done its market research e.g the poster above who is thinking twice about buying a static if VAT is imposed. If they have no idea then how can they make any plans for the future whatever the economic situation. How can any business for that matter? They have a stock pile of vans for the market place now, but they have to plan for next years business.

I see that even Haulfryn Holidays in your neck of the woods has urged the Government not to introduce the tax due to the adverse effects it will have on the tourism industry. So, even firms in Surrey hold the same view as Willerby. Still, if the Tax is introduced , and jobs are lost we can content ourselves in accepting that job losses as a result are a fiction.

From the experience of a friend the only people that seem to make money out of statics are the site owners. 3 years after paying over £25,000 for her static she needed to sell after the death of her husband and was offered less than £10,000 by the same site (to which she was forced to sell) A week later it was on sale at approx £18,000!
