Hello,
I'm a complete newbie (well, 15 minutes in). I was sitting here dreaming about buying a static caravan (used). Having it kept on a site for me to use, but also to rent out for holidays.
I have a few questions please.
1) I would buy a second hand caravan. How long a life span do they have? I don't to get caught out out, hence why I am starting some research.
2) on average how much does it cost per year to have a van parked on a nice site? Do sea views cost more?
3) if kept on a private site, is it still OK to rent them out for holidays? Or would this be considered a conflict of intersts with the site owner?
4) any general advice? Do caravans tend to come with all you need? etc, etc.

All depends on the site, some have an "age" policy regarding maximum age of caravans, they usually control all movements on their sites, they quote health and safety but it is just so you have to pay their prices and can't get quotes from third parties.Ground rent varies with, as you guessed, location facilities etc, as for second hand, depends on maintenance and again location, rust of chassis etc.Renting them out depends on who you deal with, obviously the summer months are best months for income but usually also when you would want to be using it yourself,they rent them according to facilities so the older models tend to be cheaper to rent but there may be more of them fighting for the clientelle.You would negotiate with the site owners what weeks if any you wanted them to deal with rental, the rest you look after yourself, if there is not enough premium time in what you want to give them they may just let you do it yourself, after all you will be oaying the rent for the pitch.
If you know where you want the van, walk round the site and get details of people who are letting their vans out and talk to them,they will let you know more than the on site agents who are only interested in a sale.All the people I know who have had their own vans have let them go, as they became a liabiliy financially,as for what they contain, again this depends on age specification when new etc.If you calculate the cost of a van over the period of paying for it and what it is worth at the end of five years compared to the purchase price it is an expensive pastime.

some times if you are buying a second hand static caravan that is already sited, you may be lucky enough to find that it comes with most of the stuff you need, but if the sellers of the van are exchanging for a newer van, then they may take all the gear with them.
a lot of sites these days have a age limit on vans on there site, so check the age of the caravan you are buying to ensure that you still have several years ahead of you,
sit rents vary uop and down the country, the more facilities offerd on the site, the more you have to pay in rent, you also have to pay rates which are levied by the local council, also you will have a charge for water, your caravan will be metered for electricity which you will be billed for, gas will be another extra and the price of a large gas bottle is around £48 00 per bottle, you will also need insurance which depends on the value of the caravan can be anywhere around £200-£350.00, you may be lucky enough to let your van during the summer holiday period, but you never know what sort of people are going to be using your van or what damage they may do to it, after each letting the van will need to be cleaned ready for next users, some sites arrange this for you and charge you accordingly, or you may have to make your own arrangements,
prices to purchase second hand caravans can start from as low as £3000.00, plus site rents ects
most static sites are only open for about 9 or 10 months in the year usually from March to about October.
