Hi
I love being in the countryside.
I love feeling calm and in good surroundings
I love driving my little car
I am not overly confidant
I don't mind driving the Toyota but not in tight spots!
I have a fantasy of having a little van on a quiet site where everything is lovely and peaceful.
All I have to do is take some clothes with me and some fresh food and arrive at my "second home" my little van.
Is this a fantasy?
I am on a tight budget.
Is the dream better than the reality?
Is it OK to do this alone?
We have the campervan as OH likes to try different places, so do I at times.
As well though I fancy something familiar and easy and a cheap van on a small quiet site where I could feel safe and confidant going alone ticks the boxes for me.
I have trawled through thousands of caravan adverts and feel its like looking for a needle in a haystack.
What do you think? Can you give me any opinions?
Positives? Negatives?
Hi there, from waht you've said it sounds like you've already decided this is something that you want to do which is great.
Things to consider is firstly how tight is a tight budget? most sites for cheapest vans you are looking at around £10,000. Of course I understand that there will always be ads on the internet for vans priced around £5000 or even lower but its always important to be cautious with those:
for example it may be getting sold as there's an age limit on caravans and if it's a private sale the owner may well say there's no limit only for you to then find the van has 2 years left on site.
Another issue with these is if the caravan has finance still owed on it, if the owner hasn't paid this then the caravan will be seized by the finance company as that's what the loan was secured against.
Basically it's always important to double check everything with the on site staff and get everything in writing.
The other thing is how far are you willing to go? some people prefer to be only an hour away from their site whereas some don't mind a three hour drive.
I have been thinking about the same thing. An email enquiry to the site of my choice said it would be around a £1000 per year for site fees and winter storage.
If I was to buy a cheap caravan that would be not too bad.
However, they have no seasonal pitches available at the moment as people like it there and don't move off.
Never mind, I will continue as I am for now.
Its right in the middle of the countryside. A beautifully well kept site, family owned.
There are lots of lovely walks in the area, nothing on the site except one tiny little shop and reception office, but the owners do live there, so there doesn't seem to be any trouble.
I will wait it out for a site. There are a few residential park homes, some seasonal pitches, and some touring pitches for caravans and tents.
The facilities are really clean, but the downside is that there is just one toilet block, with 3 showers and 5 toilets.
I suppose I wasn't too clear that I dont want a static - I know I couldn't afford that
I was thinking more on the lines of a sound but basic starter van and putting it in storage on the site I was thinking of. For example Smeaton Lakes store vans then pull them onto a pitch for the time you want to be there.
I am not sure if I understand the seasonal type?
Do you book a pitch and keep it for a fixed length of time regardless of whether you are on it or not?
Some dites do seasonal pitches where the van is left on the pitch, either full season or half season. Others do a store and pitch service, where van is stored and pulled onto pitch when you want it.
I believe that there can be waiting lists for seasonal pitches on some sites, some even advise securing a seasonal pitch before buying a van!
Yes!
That is what I was talking about. The site I am interested in has a waiting list at £1000 a year, which includes the winter storage.
I think that is very good value, I would find and buy an affordable second hand van.
