I'm no expert - so probably best to wait for someone who is.  Draughty could imply windows, so you could look at replacing the windows with double glazed units?  Cold walls could mean it's thin skinned/lacking in insulation.  I've never heard of cavity wall stuff for caravans (could be a business idea) and short of taking down the inner shell and rebuilding it you'd be stumped.  Could you carpet the walls facing the wind?

Or bite the bullet, and upgrade the whole thing.

We've a couple of floor vents in ours that let a heck of breeze in - around Easter when it's still cold in France a couple of carpet tiles on the vents do the trick.

Best thing we did was make thick curtains for the windows and doors, and block in the area under the van so the wind doesn't blow through. Warmed us up quite a bit.

You have various options depending on your budget and what is already there, or not there.

Double glazing can make a big difference, underfloor insulation, skirting, even replacing carpet and using a thick underlay to insulate the floor. You can even insulate the side walls and re-clad the exterior.

Hope that gives you some food for thought. Underfloor insulation( with the correct materials) is possibly your cheapest solution.

Regards Mark

Be careful if you go down the route of double glazing/central heating as it may void the british standard safety rating of the caravan, it might then be difficult to sell on at a later date.

I used to have an ABI and it had vents everywhere (loads of them) - good in the summer, but a PITA when it was cold. First job of the year was to sellotape sandwich bags over most of them - it made a heck of a difference by cutting down the howling blizzards that blew through

Hi can you expand on that piece of advice please? I dont understand how having a static caravan professionally double glazed with the correct profile would void a safety rating for the van?

I thought the vents were there for ventilation and something to do with the gas system.i.e. fridge

yes they are john, which is why you should never block up air vents in the floor, or any other part of your van for that matter. They are there for a reason.

although not all the vents will be for fresh air (oxygen) for your gas appliances !!! however i agree with the last two posters - dont block up your vents - they are also there for air circulation which can stop condensation and might lead to damp developing if air cannot circulate - if they are creating a draught make up some diverters that help dissipate the air or send it in a different direction.

all caravan walls are already insulated, though older models not so much, so 'cavity wall insulation' is a NON starter.

double glazing is an option, so long as you have windows large enough to escape from - i am sure the specialist companies who do that will offer professional advice (saw one on ebay a while back!) - but thicker curtains might help, though not much help in daylight hours, unless you want to live in darkness!

good insulation under the floor helps and a 'skirt' built externally around the bottom of the van would cut down on drafts (making sure there are air vents built into the skirt of course), carpets instead of lino also make a difference

i think i would do a 'draught test' and then work out how to stop each draught individually, you might find that simply oiling window hinges etc helps them to close fully onto their draft seals - which might need replacing

perhaps the best option is another van - though of course you might be on a site where the owner only allows you to buy them from then, in which case the other options might not be so expensive after all?
