Hi, we are new to static ownership. Our site allows usage from 1st March to 2nd January. We will drain the water system between January and March, but I am wondering what temperature to leave to heating on while it is temporarily unoccupied from now until January in order to prevent frost damage. We intend to make visits during this time. My insurance says they will not pay for damage to plumbing unless we leave it with a minimum of 15 degrees, but that seems a lot to me. I am thinking of, say 5 degrees, and covering the risk myself. Do you have any advice for me?
Thanks, David
Would it be possible to fit a frost stat to your heating, i only ask as i,v put a tube heater in the dogs kennel and wired that through a frost stat so it only comes on when the temp drops, might be worth fitting one in your van, the heater was about £15 from Toolstation.
Depending on when your van was made it may have antifreeze in the central heating system, if this is the case it should not be necessary to leave the heating on. If you wish to leave the heating on make sure to leave the electricity on or the boiler will not work. When draining down I put antifreeze/concentrated windscreen washer fluid in the u bends on the sinks,in the toilet bowl and shower, the u bend for the shower is usually outside the van and leaving the heating on will not stop any water in this u bend from freezing. Turn off the mains water, leave all taps open and put shower head in the tray to drain the hose.Leave cupboard doors open, fridge ,freezer door open
Hope this helps
Forgot to mention in my previuos post, after turning off the water and draining down flush the toilet before adding antifreeze to the toilet bowl, this will ensure there is no water in the cistern that could potentiaaly freeze
