I've spray painted cars in their entirety (won a classic car concours - so of pretty good standard!) and done patch repairs in the open, and it's challenging on a number of levels. It's almost impossible to find a perfectly still day that remains that way for the period of time necessary to do a large job, even the slightest of breeze blows the paint mist away and you waste probably as much as you use! You have to be aware of who and what is around you, as you may damage property or annoy people with wind blown paint/fumes. With the sun bearing down on the job it's often difficult to get a decent blend/finish as the paint dries too quickly and has obvious dry edged 'banding' from each pass of the spray gun. A car isn't too difficult to post paint polish up any minor blemishes, a caravan is an entirely different ball game, there's so much surface area!
Something the size of a caravan, I'd be inclined to use a gloss finish paint roller (the foam type), they can with skill produce a high class finish, and are very economical with paint used. I believe some in the vintage aircraft restoration arena use rollers where they can either not afford spraying costs or lack a suitable environment to do so. How successful a roller would be depends very much on any texture and/or ribbing on the van walls, both making the job more challenging to achieve a consistent finish.
Another consideration if you can still get them, is 'paint pads', they were quite popular a few years ago, they give a good finish on large flat areas.
