Toying with the idea of trying out a static caravan, so wouldn't be looking for anything overly expensive as I'm not 100% it'll be for us.
Looking for a campsite North Yorkshire Ripon , Boroughbridge, Knaresborough, Thirsk or around York, would like somewhere very basic rather not have pub/entertainment etc.
As I say very early days but looking at what's available and up front and ongoing cost to weigh everything up.
Anyone know a site in this kind of area?

Cannot help you with a site, sorry, but do remember that even the cheapest static may end up being expensive if you decide it is not for you.
Make sure that you start of with the assumption that whatever you pay for the static is money thrown down the drain and you will not go too far wrong.
My recommendation would be to find a park you like in the area you want, and then talk to as many of the existing owners as you can to find out what it is like. A good park operator = happy van owners. A bad park operator = a lot of very sad van owners.
Walk away from any park that will not allow you to either talk to people or see the park terms and conditions, the site licence, and especially if the first time you see the actual contract is when you have to sign it. You need to know what you are signing up for - almost all the complaints from static owners are from those that did not study the contract.
You have probably read every post you can find relating to statics, so you already know the problems many people have if they want to sell, or when the static reaches a certain age.
Bear in mind that people who are very happy with the static lifestyle rarely post on forums, so all forums are heavily weighted on the downsides, but there are thousands of very happy static owners out there; only you will know if you will be one of them or not.
So - get the location right, the park right, the pitch on the park right, and the van itself is almost immaterial.

Yes I'll echo what 22seaside has said, but I'll add that one thing you also have to bear in mind is that once you have bought a static on a site, (NEVER buy one not on a site) is that you will not be able to move it to another site if you don't like where you are. 99.9% of static sites in Britain will not take a static that they haven't sold to you. People often come on here asking if anyone knows of a site they can move their static to, and I've never heard of anyone finding one.

a lot of sites also have 15 year (and sometimes 10 year) contracts, which means after the period of time in the contract, you will either have to pay to have the van removed or buy a new van from the site, this can work out to be very expensive.

owning a static caravan in the UK can be a very expensive 'holiday', yes its convenient but it isnt cheap when you weigh up cost to purchase and annual fees.

have you thought of trying to rent privately? many owners try to recoup some of their outgoings, so you get to visit different sites and areas.


or some people buy large tourers and look for seasonal sites/contracts

I've rented statics before, and would certainly do so again. Just the same as renting a self-catering cottage really. Personally I think it's a far better option than buying, as you aren't confined to one site and can choose where you want to go. Buying a static is a minefield in this country, and all too easy to get ripped off big-time. An excellent way to get rid of a lot of money if you've got too much of the stuff.

It does seem a minefield!
Saw a van near Thirsk for 9.5k including 2020 fees which looked very appealing, but I'm sure they'd be caveats.

Too much money is a problem I wish I did have, but like you, it isn't.

There certainly would be caveats martindoggy. If you are still seriously thinking of buying, think very carefully, read everything you have put in front of you by the sales people even more carefully, and whatever you do, don't be rushed into anything. They will almost certainly try!

Always do research, ask existing owners questions and trust your gut. I love my static and have no regrets other than having to part with my tourer but we have 25 years on site and by the time that’s over I’ll either be too old to be bothered about weekends away or gone from this earth altogether so not too much of an issue lol

I have toyed in the past with the idea of a static, but just too many negatives for me. I have really enjoyed holidays in one, but I don't know of anywhere that I would always want to holiday. I prefer to go to different places, which is why I have a tourer. I tried boating for many years until I got fed up with going up and down the same river. Having it transported to another river was very expensive, and I'd probably soon get fed up with that one too.

I did one live in what was then called a "mobile home", now usually called a Park Home, but it was in the 1970s before the law changed on residential parks. They were then treated just the same as statics. I got ripped off big time!

25 years on a static park is very good. A lot of them are only 10 years then it has to go. I have seen a few 10 year old statics that I would have bought in a flash (money permitting) had they been sited, but off-site they go for peanuts. I saw one that looked lovely sell on ebay once, and it went for less than £150. Unsited they are a liability rather than an asset.

Having owned 4 and without going into too much detail, but a £8000 cheap SITED static kept for lets say 5 years on same site and then sold to trader at the end. is going to cost you around £25,000 all in. Its not a cheap venture, and requires a lot of thought. This was our last one Bought For £8 k. Kept for 5yrs, still in great nick but unable to sell privately due to its age, so sold to trader for under a £1000. I even had to pay £250 to have the decking taken away. I knew this would happen when we bought it, so no big shock but still seems a shame when it had plenty of life left in it. .

Thankyou and I think you've contributed to making my mind up, I dont think it's going to be for me too many pit falls and expense!
I think I'll look at seasonals and possibly a store and stay, I'd like to try out maybe Autumn /Winter if I can find something North Yorkshire way.

We looked at seasonals but wasnt for us. We are all different in what we want, but it aint cheap no matter what you do. Good luck with whatever you decide.

we have a static in France and a 7.5m motorhome which is getting more and more useage in the UK, if only the UK treated motorhomers in very much the same way that France does ....

i would then add that your list of 'alternatives to a UK static'
