Ive just hard that Perran Springs in Cornwall is going to sell static caravan accommodation next year - Im interested as ive camped here before and was looking into purchasing a luxury static van for myself.

Its a nice family site with fishing lakes and nice walks within there recreation fields.

If anyone is interested i suggest they email them to get on their waiting list as im not sure how many vans they will be selling.

Part of me would love a static.  My late in laws used to have one.  So easy, just throw some clothes and a pint of milk in the car and go - everything else was there.

But got to admit that I love my tents.

hi we use to have a static caravan but would never have another simple reason is you lose a lot of money when you to come to get rid of them and a lot of site ownwer want you to change them every if they are getting older for example we had a new 12ft wide  x 32x van i am going back 12years ago we paid  £12.000 and sold it back to site owner 4 years later and he would only give us £4.5000 so please be wary about static caravan owners and do your home work because there is only one winner  and that is them

I helped a friend look into statics and the other issue was all the rules and regs and site fees.  I am pretty sure the ground rent was hugely expensive and you had to ask permission to go to the loo almost!

We had one and really enjoyed having it. We only parted company reluctantly because I stayed at home after having our daughter and losing one salary meant a compromise. Now that our children are 5 & 3, it would be brilliant to still have it of course!!!

Our site owner sold it for us within 2 hours of us deciding we couldn't keep it to a family and having owned it for 3 years, we sold it for £500 less than we bought it which can't be bad. I think if you buy them brand new, there will always be a sharp drop in value but if you buy one second-hand and sell on, the loss has already been sustained. Ground rent can vary, ours was very good as it included the insurance and winterising, ground maintenance etc, but when my parents had one, they paid more and still had to insure it themselves and the site wasn't kept very tidy at all. Look around and do your research! Be prepared to be paitient, if there's a waiting list, it's for good reason and people's circumstances always change suddenly enabling 'vans to become available.

Like the other lady, we like the variety of places our tent takes us too, but sometimes I miss the 'get in the car and go' convenience!

We looked in to this a couple of years back and found that everything was very heavily weighted in favour of the site operator.

We looked at a site in a very popular part of the south coast so site rental for starters was horrendous - nearly £3000.00 pa. That was without electric, gas water etc. On top of that the site required you to vacate the 'van completely for 6 weeks of the summer so that they could let it out to any tom, dick or harry. In fairness thay did accept responsibility for the well-being of the caravan but we didn't like the the idea of having no control over who was in our 'van for those 6 weeks. It also meant that you had to empty the 'van of all your personal belongings. IIRC I think there were also restrictions on the length of any one stay that you the owner could stay for.

The final blow is that at the end of ten years you had to sell the 'van back to the site, and if you wanted to continue, your new had to bought from them.

Needless to say it didn't take long for us to make up our minds to buy a band new tourer.

Vic
