It seems that nearly all CAMC sites have free Wifi to all pitches. Since we were going to spend a few nights at 'Silverbank' site in Banchory, I took my laptop and Mrs. L took her 'tablet', just to see if they worked.
Things were not quite as it seemed. Firstly you have to register an account and provide an email address. Presumably this is so that they can bombard you with spam. This was OK as we had an email that we never used.
Anyway, we managed to log on the laptop and got a whole 1, yes, ONE Mbps.
You can have this for hour, but them presumably have to log on again.
If you really need umpteen gigabytes speed, then you still have to pay.
Mrs. L's tablet just showed 'out of range' and couldn't be used.
Day two and thee - no internet at all. Apparently router had died and a new one was ordered. It is due in 5 days time.
Free Wifi anyone?
------------- Two drifters off to see the world.
I'm tired of reality, so I'm off to look for a good fantasy.

I looked at the free Wi-Fi last time I was away, but decided it was far from 'FREE', you had to sell your soul to the Devil, otherwise known as BT, with a contractual agreement to let them into your life and spam you!
All for a pittance of data! Think I'd rather spend money on my phone mobile data service, without all the data restrictions AND without giving BT permission to annoy me!
CAMC really do take the wee-wee out of their members at times!
I was unaware that CAMC is with BT.
BT is moving over to EE, so when we did the 2-yearly review of the contract, we had to change from a BT hub to an EE hub. Now were digital (dont ask me details, Im not techy) so the phone cable goes into the hub, not into the socket on the skirting. Our broadband download & upload speeds have quadrupled, better customer care than BT (in our limited experience) and we pay less. No complaints from us, so far.
Hopefully the Wi-Fi service will improve at CAMC sites as they upgrade over the next few years like we did. Had to log in at Balbirnie, didn’t bother completing the process, just used the mobile data.
For a club, supposedly for the benefit of members, they seem remarkably cagey about the full T and Cs of signing up/use, only found them when looking at registering on site via the actual WiFi! Maybe because they are not so appealing, and they need to entrap you when you are desperate! Can't find them on their web site, only the brief FAQ above, and a equally brief set up guide, but no full T and C's!
I've no love for BT, so not enthused about about giving personal details for them to use/abuse as they see fit!

The CAMC does seem to try to monetise everything. We gave up with pointless slow site Wifi, got a Tesco rocket pack sim (25Gb for a £10 for 30 days and it just expires, no auto renew or extra costs, unless you choose to), stuck it in an old smartphone and set that to allow tethering. Worked fine for a four week holiday for the odd film and a bit of TV sport.
I don't think it particularly unusual to provide email details when logging onto a WiFi network, in fact it might even be the law? I don't usually bother with site WiFi as I use my phone 4G connection which seems to work in the majority of places I visit. However I did try it at Ferry Meadows and went through the process. It didn't cause any problems with unwanted contact post connection. Depends how much you want free WiFi?
As I have my own Mi-Fi on my van, I seldom use site Wi-Fi unless I have to, e.g. at sites where mobile phone signal is poor or non-existent.
I shall investigate the CAMC free site Wi-Fi when I stay at one of their club site later this year.
