Great site went to visit sister in law there last summer really nice. Again what everyone is saying is great, Southport is a must though very quaint town. Liverpool FC do tours as well in trophy rooms etc. Liverpool City is great alot of building work going on for the Capital of Culture next year. At the Albert Dock there is the Duck boat you can go on, it goes around the city giving you alot of information and then drives into the Albert Dock and becomes a paddler taking you in and out of the dock by water really good fun kids would love it.

Ten Pin Bowling in Southport next to Frankie and Benny and various other restaurants. Have a great time.

Thank you so much everyone, people on here are so nice!

Can I just ask one more thing, as I'm the only driver I've found out that we can easily and quite cheaply get the train to both Liverpool and Southport, once in both places would we be okay without a car, don't mind doing a bit of walking, just like the idea of a nice train ride and no hassle finding a parking space.  For example how far would the Albert Dock be from the railway station - any idea anyone?

Pleased to hear so many people like Abbey Farm too, it does have a lot of good reviews on here and it was purely because someone mentioned it that we discovered it and decided to book.

Thanks again.

Hi Tracey

From Lime Street Station to Albert Dock is walkable through the city centre. It would take you around 20 mins. You will see when strolling through all the building work being done for the new shopping centre. Albert Dock has just had a new stadium being built as well. The Beatles Museum is there also. Train is better anyway you can have a couple of wee drams enroute. Enjoy!

As tracey said, but you'll most probably be on the local underground line from Ormskirk - get off at Central Station and 15/20 mins walk to albert dock. Southport station is even closer to everything - right in the centre of town.

The best way to the Albert Dock from Ormskirk is to get off at Moorfields and walk down - or get off at Central, go down a level and get the train to James Street which is even closer.

As someone who lives nearby in Formby (and has camped in this campsite), I would agree with all of these posts. Ormskirk also has some good pubs (including nice one's to eat in) and there are couple on the A59 main road that are walkable from the campsite. There is also a reasonable swimming pool in Ormskirk,

It is also very flat with lots of quiet roads which makes it good for cycling.

One thing to bear in mind, though, it is not easy to travel by train from Ormskirk to Southport (or Formby) - you need to take a train virtually into Liverpol and then take another one back out to Southport. The trains are freque (every 15 mins) though so it's possible, just a bit of a pain. However, it is also an easy drive from Ormskirk to Southport and it is relatively easy to park in Southport.

Get off the train at Moorfields for the Albert Dock, it is much closer than Lime Street.  The Wirral country park is really nice and if you take bikes there is a great traffic free cycle route through the country park.  If you like shopping there is Cheshire Oaks outlet village near Ellesmere Port between Liverpool and Chester.  The Blue Planet Aquarium is also in the same area.  We like to cycle from the boat museum at Ellesmere Port along the canal tow path into Chester City Centre but that might be a bit far for kids.  Knowsley Safari Park on the outskirts of Liverpool is also a great day out.  Liverpool's Cathedrals are also both architecturally interesting to see.  A trip on the Mersey Ferry is fun and if you get off at Seacombe there is 'Spaceport' which we have never been to but which sounds good.  Speke Hall is a National Trust property out near Liverpool Airport and during the school holidays they have the staff all dressed up and have all sorts of activities and events on for families.  The Beatles museum in Liverpool is also good but might not interest the kids.  I am sure there is tonnes more in the Liverpool area but my mind has gone blank.  I hope you have a great time as it is a great area!

Hi

we've spent several weekends in the area this year - if you've got bikes, be sure to take them as there's some great cycling in the area, especially near to the coast.

"One thing to bear in mind, though, it is not easy to travel by train from Ormskirk to Southport"

But if they get the Wigan train at either Hoscar or Burscough Bridge (Both stations closer than Ormskirk) then they can go to Southport !

Parking in Southport is easy - especially if you use the park and ride which is only £1 all day including a bus into Southport town centre.    Use Esplanade during the week and Fairways on a Sunday.
The train into Liverpool is easy - and saves parking in Liverpool which is a right pain - especially with all the road work etc.

traceyd

they also started doing that tour at the albert dock where you start off the tour driving around in bus but it is an amphibious duck vehicle and drives into the duck which is a bit different and novel for the kids!

also have a look at anderson boat lift if you like the canal idea as this seems quite appealing and i dont think you would be too far away by car
