I suppose lots of people use Caravan Club sites, myself included, because they know what to expect and they know that standards of facilities and behaviour will be to a high standard. Now you can get commercial campsites that charge less than the CC but there are also commercial campsites that charge much more. The site you mention is has a superb location and its possible that the site would not exist at all if it was not run by the Caravan Club. The Club have also just spent quite a bit of money up grading the site so I suppose they will want to recover some of the investment!

2 nights at the Caravan Club site at Chatsworth comes in at around £53.00 for 2 adults and 2 children, caravan, awning and EHU. Most of the places we stay for weekends are around £35.00 or so for the same. Having never stayed at a CC site before, I would be interested to hear views on whether they are worth the extra money or would I be just as well off finding a private site in the same area and investing the £20 difference in wine ? Thanks in advance.

Peak season is even more - £7 per adult per night, plus £3.70 per child per night, plus £9 per night pitch fee (with EHU) - so for you, the 2 days would cost over £60 in peak season. (And that's at Members' rates! Add another £7 per night if you're not.) Well over the top I reckon.

Is it really so difficult to book CC sites at peak times? This is my first season and have only had my van since May. My OH works at a school so we are restricted to weekends and school holidays. Booked C&CC site for 4 days a Whit half-term at short notice and last month booked 3 sites in Devon for end July \ August, only had problem with 1 day of availability.

I like the idea of the "known quality" of club sites was thinking of joining the CC as well to add to the choice but from the comments in this tread I wonder if it will be worth it. Will we ever be able to book a peak CC pitch?

Tony, it really all depends on where it is. Why not take a look at the caravan club web site - you can find out availability (and prices) for all of their club sites without being a member or actually booking. (Remember that the cost is £7 per night extra while you aren't a member, though!)

The "late availability" pages will give you an idea of how easy or difficult it will be to get a pitch, and the calendars for each site are good too.  Even if it looks all booked, you could try ringing a site direct, they often have cancellations at the last moment.

Also, the "no facilities" sites are rarely all booked up.  They always have EHU, so if you have your own toilet and shower they are fine.  I have just booked one for less than £9 per night.

You will save the membership fee in about 5 nights if you want to use CC sites, so worth joining.

Thanks Jennifer,

I am more than happy to try \ use "no facilities" sites, even dare I say no EHU , but my wife insists on a site with at least a "proper" toilet even though I do the emptying of the cassette and we have a separate shower (never been used from new!)

As I have said we have 3 C&CC sites in Devon booked for July \ August, don't think we will do any winter camping this year so will look at joining CC too for next year.

regards

Tony

We attend rallys with our Club at private full facility sites and always use Caravan Club sites when on our own.

We find the CC Sites to be first class, you always know what your getting.

As regards Chatsworth CC site, we have stayed there a couple of times, superb site and just unlock the gate and step into Chatsworth park itself. Adult and Dog heaven!

Were off to a Club rally at Red Lion Inn Gloucester tomorrow and then off to the CC Club site at Burford for a week from Sunday.

We have not stayed at Red Lion before, but having been to Burford before we know what to expect. Another first class CC Site!
