I too would recommend Carreglwyd campsite in Port Eynon. Right next to the beach. Pleasant village with pubs, chippie and village store.

There is a site in Oxwich that doesn't take caravans. Oxwich has probably the best beach in the Gower. Unfortunately I cannot recall the name or comment on the site as I have a caravan, but have been to Oxwich a number of times delivering to the Oxwich Bay Hotel.

Carreglwyd in Port Eynon is a nice site, but the beach is not as nice as Oxwich.

To be honest there is not much in the Gower to do other than drink or stroll on the beach. Shops are few and far between and prices are not the most competitive. Swansea is about a 30 min drive (Not that far but it is a narrow winding road) You have a choice of supermarkets, restaurants, anything you woulod expect to find in a city. The Waterfront museum is worth a trip and entry is free.

disagree with legsdownkettleon, yes you are correct about swansea being a 20 min drive away but there again i dont spend a weeks holiday in debenhams, As for not much to do well i guess every bodys holiday is different but a few things available in the gower,

Horse/pony trekking, fishing, walking, blue flagged beaches port eynon bay is one where oxwich isnt also there are some very very dangerous swimming areas on this beach. paragliding, windsurfing, kayaking, pick your own fresh fruit and veg, heritage museums dont need to go into swansea for that, Archery, Boat trips, High class 5 star restuarants, Squash courts, Port Eynon also is steeped in Ghost walks and smugglers with caves and even an old Smugglars house carved into the cliffs there also the Gower golf course and agriculture shows.

the camp site you were thinking of is called Oxwich Camping Park caravans not allowed due to fact of the stgeepness of the pitches and the way the fields hold water and become water logged.

If you like getting wet, the Gower is great. But in September things are likely to be a bit wet. I had many tent and caravan trips in Port Eynon as a kid. But when it rains it can be a miserable place and the lack of a supermarket means you are likely to spend a lot on groceries.

Paragliding, windsurfing, kayacking pick your own fresh fruit and veg are all great in the sun, but they don't look too appealing looking out of my window today.

I was pointing out that on a miserable day, my kids would be bored to tears at Port Eynon or Oxwich. I would be happy to sit and read a book, but I would be getting dragged into Swansea Waterfront Museum or bowling when the rain started.

I still think the view from Oxwich is better than Port Eynon, and prefer the beach, but each to their own.

I have seen a few caravans parked in the Oxwich Bay Hotel, but I don't know if they are seasonal or tourers.

I too was really surprised by the fact that there is nothing for kids to do here - right, before you all start, my kids love body boarding and I am quite content for them to be stuck in a field all day but there's hardly any castles or things going on for any of you whose kids needs entertainment of the manmade kind - we go to Cornwall and Scotland a lot but this is sooo much more remote feeling (for services I mean) - the nearest proper food Co-op is in Killay which is 17 miles from the end - to make a curry we had to go in one village to get the chicken and another to get the sauce - how do the locals manage!!  But as I said it didn't bother us but it might some.  We went to Pitton Cross but if we ever went again we would go to Hillend - went there to look at it, because the body boarding is ace - it's all we'd do all week if we went there.  Carreglwyd is also good as it's right next to the beach - Pitton cross is a real walk from a beach and it's steep up and down to Rhosilli.  We like Tristram in Polzeath and Hillend reminded me of that - there's a lovely cafe there and the toilet block was superb.  But we didn't go there because someone on here said it only took tents, well it takes motorhomes as well as I found out when we got there!!

we to found that nothing much to do in the gower for tenagers if the weather is bad. if the weather had been better they love surfing and body boarding but i have to say the beaches are no where near as nice as cornwall we thought. had to say thought hillend looked nice but dont think they do hook up.
