Hi Suzzie

We've just got back from our weekend staying at Ramslade and as promised I thought I'd let you know how we got on.17

Well, what can I say????  I can 100% guarantee that you will NOT be disappointed with Ramslade.  It is a beautiful 5*+ site.  Since we last stayed there, it has completely changed.  The CC have spent £2million refurbing it and it's worth every penny!17

We had a hardstanding service pitch down an small 'avenue' and loved it.  There are a selection of hardstanding and grass pitches and they're not too packed in either.  There's a small shop/reception and info room on arrival.  There are now 2 brand new toilet/shower blocks that were spotless all weekend (even though the site was full). They also have a laundry and washing up bay (inside) at each block and a very small (paddling) pool for the kids.  There's also a large playing field with climbing stuff for the kids too - plenty of room for them to let off steam!  The dog walk/meadow is great too.17

The bus stop is right outside the site exit.  We caught it into Paignton.  £2.25 per adult return (not bad!) and FREE for our 4-legged friends!17  Paignton itself isn't particulary doggie friendly.  There are some pubs along the main stretch that allow them outside.  We ate in the little cafe on the pier (right at the entrance) as they allow dogs inside.  They had a good selection of food and drinks and even gave our boy some doggie treats while we were there!!!17

Stoke Gabriel village itself is gorgeous (1 mile - easy walk from the site - but beware of the small roads and no pavements!).  There's a general store (for papers as the CC site don't offer them), a PO, a tea room and a couple of pubs in the village.  Down on the river there's a lovely cafe/tea room where you can sit outside and watch the kids crabbing.17

Back on site there was oodles of wildlife.  Bunnies and birds everywhere.  I saw a green woodpecker yesterday and Saturday night we went to sleep to the sound of an owl!!!17

We cannot wait to go back to Ramslade and would not hesitate to HIGHLY recommend it to everyone.17

I'm off to do my review now!17

Hope I've been helpful.  If you think of anything else you need, let me know.

Kernow Camper17

Thanks for that long review it sounds great....... wasn't sure I'd done the right thing as some people said that it wasn't that good but re reading those reviews some where from 2007 I think that was before the refit.

We have to dogs and it is must that whatever we do they are included..... we going to take a trip on the South Devon railway as CC are doing a special offer...  Did you manage to get onto the beach....have a list of the dog friendly ones as my son will want to go there.  Also fancy Berry head to....did you visit there??

What were the grass pitches like?  was there a good amount of space?

Does the site still have a games room?

Thanks again

Sue

Hi Sue

We don't go anywhere or do anything without our dog!  The steam train that runs from Paignton to Kingwear is great - very doggie friendly (although I think there is a small charge for them?).  We've done it before and plan to do it again when we are in Dartmouth next month (staying at another great site - Little Cotton).  May be worth looking at doing the Round Robin - steam train from Paignton to Kingswear, then over on the passenger/foot ferry to Dartmouth, then river cruise up the River Dart to Totnes, then open top bus ride back to Paignton all for £17.50 per adult (I think it's £11 each for steam train only).  17

I think part of the beach in Paignton is doggie friendly but we were near the harbour area and pier and he certainly wasn't allowed on those parts!  Didn't visit Berry Head, sorry.17

Grass pitches were large enough for caravan, car and awning 'in a row', so enough space for all.17

Didn't see a games room, although we didn't actually look!

Well......... the site was very well kept and the wardens apart from one of the male ones were brill....the toilet blocks were brill......but we didn't really like the site.

The hard standing are was more like a large carpark.... and the grassy side the some of the pitches were far to small and the roads were very tight.....we ended up pitching up at the top end by the road and the slope was very bad all the vans on our row were on loads of bricks..... a group of us had to push one poor chap onto a pitch as it was so tight.....to many trees..... at night being next to the road the boy racers were out.....my OH went to the dog walk and saw them rushing past bumper to bumper very dangerous.

We won't go to the site again will probably stick with West Ayton lovely site.....but my opinion is my opinion and other people would probably like the site as said the toilets and showers were brill....and it was a pretty site........great kids area and dog walk too.

Sue

sorry to hear the site didnt live up to expectations. When we arrived we were told that there was only one hard standing left but some grass pitches on the hill. We went straight for the hard standing and when we had walk round the site we were glad we did because as you said the hill was steeper than I thought. We saw one twin axle that was impossible to level and the occupants faced a walk uphill to the fixed bed, dont know how they managed to cook anything. Our main concern wasnt the boy racers on the road but the kid racers on their pedal cycles on site sometimes up to ten of them at break neck speed. Just needed one slip and there could have been a serious accident as the majority did not have helmets.

How lond did it take you get there?? we stopped at Cheddar CC on way what a lovely little site...... but the journey to Devon seemed to take forever....so much traffic...... we've decided not to venture down there next year..... the Yorkshire coast is so beautiful we will stick with that and maybe go to Wales or Scotland.

Sue

we split the journey, left Carlisle at 11am arrived at Blackmore CC site at Malvern at about 3.30pm, left next day at noon arrived at Ramslade at 3.00pm not a bad drive down apart from the weather.

I agree with you with regards the distance and what you get at the end.

If you are thinking of Wales you should try the Isle of Anglesey we loved it.

The CC site at Oban on the West Coast of Scotland is a smashing site although that might be a bit of a stretch distance wise. We love Dumfries and Galloway loads of great sites and only an hour or two from us. Check the review section.
