Hi Cave Troll, We spent 27 nights touring Skye, Harris, Lewis, North Uist, Benbecula, South Uist and Barra.
We had been on Lewis before but non of the rest. Also we knew folks that live on Lewis and on Barra so we went for more than just the usual touristy/sightseeing reason.
We did enjoy it all but if we were going again, we would have stayed shorter Stornoway and longer at Cnip. We would also have stayed shorter on the Uists and longer on Barra, but that is all in hindsight ofcourse.
We will go back to Skye again and explore it more. The 5 days we had there were not long enough.
Although the weather on the mainland was iffy during August of 2008, our raincoats never came out of the locker during the entire trip and it only drizzled on 2 occasions, both during the night. However the wind was bad on 2 other nights and on both of these I dropped the roof of our Pop Up and we slept on through it.
You will enjoy the Western Isles. The people are friendly, the food is superb and the scenery is to die for.

I posted about this place a while back - after the documentry aired see post
We stayed there recently on a tour of the Western Isles. The site is on the boggier east side of Harris, handy for Tarbert for provisions/ferry, also good for the Leveburgh ferry if you are coming from the Uists.
Parking is on the road, as the small parking area can be taken up by campervans. This makes it quite a hike to get gear down the camping area, there is a wheelbarrow to use but that doesn't make it easy given the terrain. Tents are pitched on grass covered peat lazy beds with drainage channels cut between the beds. This can lead to standing water and that glory of Scottish camping holidays, the culicoides impunctatus or midge. The lazy beds are not huge, advisable to state your tent size at the time of booking/enquiry to ensure you will be able to find a suitable pitch. The toilet block is at one end of the site and has a single toilet, two showers and a wash hand basin that only has cold running water. No hot water and the fact that there is no outer door where the wash basin is make wet shaving difficult verging on impossible. There is a second toilet and wash basin in an adjacent byre - again only cold water in the basin. There are low level lights around the site for those night time toilet trips but the boggy nature of the terrain means that you need to be careful and still sensible to carry a torch.
The real gem of the site is the blackhouse, this has good facilities including a peat fuelled stove for heat, a gas fuelled stove for cooking, basin with hot and cold running water, electric kettle and toaster, clothes rack for drying, a large dining table with chairs and two very comfortable sofas. The blackhouse offers somewhere to prepare food, eat and relax. Homemade bread and eggs are left on the dining table for campers to help themselves. Dogs are welcome on the site and in the blackhouse. The site owners drop in for a chat in the evening. The site owners have plans to convert the blackhouse into a holiday let, so how long this facility will remain open to campers is indeterminate.
Enjoyed our stay and will return, weather and blackhouse dependant.

We've just come back from the same tour as you and agree - Barra was stunning, although no official campsites and Cnip was a great site. The weather was poor, very windy and wet although we were in a campervan which helped (although we also had to drop the roof due to the wind). There's a nice site at Shawbost on Lewis, really friendly and has everthing you need and more - there's a kitchen to cook and eat in if the weather is bad and the owners will even lend you blankets if it is cold! It's not got the most stunning views but it is a great little site, you can even use the swimming pool at the school next door in the evenings.
One site we did not like was on Benbecula, not the friendliest welcome and very pricey, £20 a night (with EHU). Cnip was great value, £7 for a family of four! Best of all was the wild camping - where else can you have a beach to yourself in august?
We camped at Glenbrittle on Skye, another stuning location.
Fabulous place, will definately return.
