That might be the answer to some folks need to get off camping early in the season..Ok pretty basic accommodation maybe just a heater in..but if you take your camping gear..minus the tent I suppose you could make yourself really comfy in one of them...Just one wee question..might seem silly...but you can cook in them cant you?? No HxS rules and regs forbidding it is there..I would think not..but you never know these days....

We stopped in one for a couple of nights in Sept last year at the NT site in Great Langdale, took our tent but people were bailing their tents out as we arrived so went for the more expensive but much more comfortable option of the pods. These had no facilities at all and are basically like a an old style ridge tent with a patio door at one end.

We would definitely use them again at this site and at others. We also camped at Castlerigg Hall on the same trip and they had a couple of them. They had lights in and an electrical socket.

We are staying in a wigwam in Kirkby Lonsdale, Cumbria in May and can't wait.  After a very long drive from Hampshire we don't fancy then having to put the tent up and this seems the next best thing to our Monty.

Incidentally the NT site at Great Langdale also has Yurts if anyone is interested but they're a bit pricier than the camping pods.

More info here.

The camp[ing pod is £40 per night.  Lenny Henry's hotel is £29 per room per night for up to four people.  Not sure I'd prefer a yurt to an en-suite room.  People may start to accuse me of Glamping!

Well, we are back from Eskdale C&CC site & are hooked on pods.  Accomodation was good for the three of us, it would be a squeeze for four adults.  It rained hard when we were there, but we still enjoyed the stay. The pod was warm due to its insulation & double glazing as well as the gas heater supplied on this site.  We had a little condensation, but much less than in a tent.  There is no furniture, but the floor has an insulated foam tile covering.  There are coat hooks & some battery lamps.  You may wish to bring torches or a camping lantern as these are not very bright.  There is a covered canopy over the front doors big enough to sit or kneel under when cooking without getting wet in the rain.  The front section is decking large enough for a couple of chairs, a stove & possibly a table.  You will need all of your tent camping equipment.  At Eskdale, the pods are very close to the toilets & washing up.  The pods are grouped in two circles around picnic tables - reminded me of the covered wagons in the old cowboy films (Blazing Saddles & baked beans?)

I have only one minor gripe, & it is a little one.  The two doors at the front have a really annoying closure system.  There is a turn latch on the inside & a key lock on the outside.  If someone goes out - say during the night to the loo, they can't close the door without locking it & hence locking the other occupants in.  Likewise if someone goes in & closes the door with the latch, the doors can't be opened from the outside.  A bit of looking could, I am sure have found a better lock/latch.

They are a fairly cheap way of going away with little equipment.  Cost us £40 per night.  Probably not as comfy as a family tent with a bit more space, but great for a small family & excellent for year round breaks due to the insulation.  They are popping up all over the country, see their website.

Steve.
