I dont like paying for WiFi anywhere.  I have my 3G allowance but this is no good if I want to watch a footy match on Sky Sports on my mobile as it eats most of  my monthly allowance.

well not only was there fre wifi at the french site we visited no ne batted an eyelid when you plugged in either. Wifi was available in the bar. DD & DS went over every night taking one charger and two netbooks with them, plus the euro connection adaptor. Theyshared the charger and we charged the netbooks during the day at the tent when we remembered too. Tho the first night we didn't realise people were plugging in so the kids came home when the netbooks died. It then took them a couple of night to pluck up the courage to plug in!!

There was loads of people doing it. Was quite unreal seeing all these people poring over laptops lol

if you didn't have your own laptop/netbook you could go in a special room and use theirs for 1 euro for 1 mins.

Depends on how much you want it of course!   Free is good but I would be willing to pay £5 a day or £20 a week. Most budget hotels charge £10 to £15 a day. If you are a BT broadband customer you get free BT openzone minutes, and if you have an O2 dongle it is "unlimited" (subject to fair usage etc.)

Depends on the Wifi, too. If you have to sit in a shed next to reception to get it, then it should be free. If the campsite has installed the kind of infrastructure required to deliver the service to all pitches, then a reasonable fee is acceptable.

Also, remember that getting a decent internet service in the more remote rural areas is not straightforward or cheap. However, campsites should appreciate that offering Wifi is not a "cash cow" but rather something that will bring customers to them that otherwise would go elsewhere.

Viggo,

Sorry, but if a campsite had installed equipment to deliver to all pitches, that would add to cost of pitches and penalize people who don't want WiFi - a bit like the CCC's site at Bellingham that makes everyone pay for EHU!  Needless to say, we've found an alternative to that site. Paying for WiFi access as you need it - providing it's not the extortionate sums mentioned above - is only fair on all. Like EHU, if people want the facility, pay extra.

Viggo also makes the point that getting WiFi in more remote, rural areas is not cheap. Locally we can vouch for that and the cost is reflected in the price charged per hour.

Save some money people, do your research about where you're going at home and suss out local info from locals when you're there.

I'm with jade on this. I'd sooner WiFi was charged separately (as long as the charge is reasonable) rather than being subsidised by those who don't use it. (I must admit WiFi isn't important to me when choosing a campsite - the last thing I want to do when I'm camping is stare at a screen.)

What makes you say that? The CC, for instance, is working with a commerical firm to put in the kit to deliver Wifi coverage everywhere on their campsites - but they haven't put up the cost of pitches by a penny to pay for it. If you want Wifi, you pay separately for it. OK, the CC has a different way of operating to most commercial campsites, but commercial sites are doing the same, working with the likes of Park Wifi, and the point remains - Wifi is a facility that can be added to the campsite to make it more appealing to customer, but not every camper wants it.

I don't watch TV when I'm away, and would not be happy if I was charged more for my pitch because it had an aerial hook-up point. The same thing should apply to Wifi.

Yes, I invariably pay for more facilties than I use but that's just the way it is. I mean, why should I have to pay for gents toilets and showers?

Back on topic, Dornafield campsite do not charge for unlimited wifi 24/7 on every pitch.

Some campsites charge separately for showers, of course.
