There has been a boom this year for campers and caravanners alike and generally if you look at the pitch prices they have increased somewhat ridiculous. Because of the boom, many landowners get a bit greedy but they have to remember that there's plenty of competition out there for grabs. They will have to be careful that they don't price themselves out of the market because once you start losing custom it's very hard to get them back and the only way they can survive then is to reduce their prices accordingly below the normal pitch fees. I wanted to go and try my new caravan out at a local CL which was £11 per night inclusive of electric hook up and because we wanted to go out for 4 nights it would have cost £44 with no facilities. We decided to go on a local Camping & Caravanning Club site with there special offer which is 4 nights for the price of 3 including EHU. The total cost was just over £40 and on site were showers, a toilet block and other useful facilities. It does pay to shop around but like I said, the landowners have to careful regarding how much they charge for their site fees.

We just found a site that would have been £27.50 a night for a medium sized tent with EHU and 2 adults and 2 children. Didnt look that special either and they were only charging £18.50 for caravans so I can only guess they didnt really want to take tents.

What annoys me is all the extras. This site had a great long list of them including £1 for your dog!!!

The good thing about being members of C&CC is that there is plenty of choice.

Taking the average campsite charges as including two adults, one unit, and one car, what would you consider to be a fair price?

I'll bet it varies considerably because what one person finds expensive another may find easily affordable.

Taken from their website...

Tents are welcome all year

  • Single night £10 per adult per night
  • Multiple nights  £8 per night
  • 6 – 18 years £5 per person per night
  • 5 years and under – NO CHARGE

So a family of 5 staying for 2 nights would pay between £31 and £16 per night depending on age of children

Yes, the car is bigger than the 'van.

we just paid £12.50 a night for a super weekend at Hollingworth Lake with EHU.

in July we are paying £20 a night in Cornwall, no EHU, I think that is too much. That said it's a quiet site, off the beaten track, limited pitches and no large groups allowed/tolerated

so as it's our honeymoon/main summer holiday this year we have coughed up!!!

PS in their defence, they said they don't charge for our event shelter, it's free to charge phones and freeze ice packs and showers are included...many sites now charge for these 'essential' extras!

I agree with the excessive prices, can you imagine ths scenario:
A man goes into a car rental, says he wants to hire a car,
yes they say thats £ xx pounds, man says ok,
they ask how many people will be using the car ?
he says 4 , they say oh that'll be an extra £ 10 per person,
you say you are going camping ? yes says the man.
will you be towing a trailer?, yes says the man
oh that'll be extra £ 20.
will you be attaching a roof rack ?
yes says the man.oh that'll be an extra £ 20
will you be going far? they say.
about 250 miles the man replies,
oh over 50 miles, that'll be an extra £ 1 per mile.

If you were that man, what would you say ?

Maybe if owners would just take notice off the moral importance of the thread, instead of greedy unscrupulous gain, maybe there could be more people enjoying their ammenities and spending more on site from facilities, than they charge for as ' EXTRAS '

£10 per person? I'd want my own loo, shower & breakfast delivered to my tent for that!

I've avoided any sites published in 'Cool Camping'. Mostly because their profile has been raised so chances are they will be quite busy, but also that they might then take advantage of that publicity and raise their prices. This site seems to be an example of that!

What I don't get is that if you were a family of 4 staying in a caravan, it would cost you £20 a night. If you were a family of 4 staying in a tent, it would cost you £30 a night!

But as has been said - if people are mad enough to pay it, then they will keep charging it.
