There are several camping places on the road to Mevagissy. All/most with good facilities, Quite a few camping sites near the London Apprentice (on the road to Mevagissy) Turn left at the Mc Donalds in St Austell and follow the road. For a real treat try the Mevagissy to Fowey Ferry ride across St Austell Bay. Cheap and beautiful scenery, well worth the money. Fowey in particular is a beautiful place to visit. The best view of the harbour is from Hanson Drive  with splendid views across to Polruan. Walk down the hill into Fowey, have a tour of the shops and cafes/restaurants. but DO NOT DRIVE into the town as the road can only accommodate cars and small vans, and has a couple of sharp bends in the road with narrow openings. There is a small town bus which will get you back up the hill free if you have a bus pass.

 Hi MGB .

I would recommend The Saint Ives area . It has everything you are asking The beaches are brilliant ,Fishing villages .Lots of pubs .  If you travel down thew coast to Zennon it Is very rugged and beachs good for surfing and lots of rock pools . You can travel over to the other coast in a short time to Pra Sands and Marizon . Everywhere In this area Is stunning .

Sorry cant recommend Campsites . Suggest you look at all UK Campsite reviews for this area.

It's ZENNOR, PRAA SANDS and MARAZION. Just correcting the spelling so that you can find these places easily via your satnav or road atlas! The Tinners Arms at Zennor does a lovely pint and a very different, unusual burger.

As Zizag says, lots of fab beaches all around the area. When we go to Cornwall we always stay at Polmanter, just outside St Ives.

Vic

For correcting my bad spelling ." Whoops"

Especially If putting Into a Sat Nav .

MGB certainly wont find those places I wrongly gave . Ouch

Anyway .

I cant recommend St Ives for swimming now .

Apparently there have been reports of SHARK attacking fishing boats .

I love Porthtowan.  It's my Cornish secret and we go there out of season....very quiet.
Not 'too far away from us', then.  It's no secret in high season, I'm afraid.
I know.  I look most days on the Blue Bar webcam (saddo that I am!! ) and can see.   I wouldn't even attempt it in the Summer.  We go in Autumn/Winter and have been very lucky with the weather....we were sat on the terrace of the  Blue Bar dining in February!  Plus dogs can go on beach.

Another vote for the Blue Bar! Its only about two miles by road from where I'm working this summer so its fab to be able to nip over there on a mid week afternoon off. Feels v naughty. But nice!

Well, we booked Tregarton near st austell. Almost booked River Valley nearby but it just looked too confined, and you have to pitch on gravel.

Would have preferred to stay further south but have a long enough drive back to the ferry home. But we will definitely take a day-trip down to st Ives, etc.

Thanks again everyone for your help,

John.

An evening visit to the Minack theatre is a must. Its a theatre carved out of the cliff face, between Penzance and lands end

Sun Haven Valley used to be our favourite too until it was ruined by the new owners,£600 for 2 weeks in the summer is too much for us now and the last time we were there we had 4 days with no hot water, hope they have fixed it.

Get your wellys out if it rains heavy you are in the bottom of a valley next to a stream that floods.

We go to Carnevas now just up the road, much cheaper and nice friendly owners.

Andy

Hi John, you will not be disapointed with Tregarton Park I have just returned this weekend and stay there regularly when in Cornwall.
This year we caught the train from St Austell (£1:90 to park for day) to St Ives (£5 ish return), it takes approx 1 hour and the station in St Ives is right on a beautiful beach. There are lots of nice places to visit in the area of St Austell.
