I am planning to visit Scotland next year too in a tent, spending 3 x 5 nights at C&CC club sites in Glencoe, Rosemarkie and Tarland by Deeside near Cairngorm, with the intention to tour the surrounding areas at each base.

5 nights might be a bit too much at Rosemarkie if you plan to tour the area, you may be better having a night or two at Rosemarkie then moving to Nairn.

The issue I have is that I find striking camp and then set up again after a long drive very tiring, as I am camping on my own. Hence I prefer fewer base camps.

Once you get north of the Great Glen, the roads in Scotland, while adequate, can be narrow yet they still have to cope with all the traffic that services any normal town and rural community.

Milk tankers, fuel tankers, shop delivery trucks and, because of the very nature of the area, tourists; by cars, buses and some even towing caravans.

These roads take quite a pounding and have to be repaired fairly regularly and we have yet to do a north trip and not been held up by road works somewhere along the route.

On roads with Passing Places, it is good manners that if you are towing or just sight seeing, you not only pull in for on-coming traffic, but also those coming up behind who may be in more of a hurry than yourself.
It can be very tiring, driving on these roads when you have to be aware of both those in front and also behind.

We are the visitors and must be aware of those locals who are just trying to go about their normal daily business and not hold them back from doing so. This will mean that a journey on a normal A-class road that may be travelled in an hour, can take twice as long up north.

So give yourself twice as long as you think and then you will enjoy the journey as it should be enjoyed.

Would love to have the time to do what you are planning to do, however your first and last stops strike us as a little strange. Braithwaite Fold is about 3/4 of an hours drive to and from the motorway and coming off at the same junction you have to drive past both Low Park Wood  and Meathop Fell (both CC and both easier to get booked on than Braithwaite) and Blackpool South is about 20 mins to 1/2 an hour off the M6 depending on the time of day/year you are travelling, have you considered somewhere like Chester Fairoaks CC or Chapel Lane CC at Birmingham, depending on whether you are using A55 or M6

Whatever you decide we hope you enjoy and the weather stays fair

Why have kids when you can have a dog?

Let me explain.

We did Scotland in 2009 and stopped at TroutbeckHead on the way up.  We quite fancy being close to a town/village centre for the overnighter to be able to get out for the evening without having to drive.

Also after 2 1/2 weeks of splendid scenery we stopped at Blackpool to enjoy the brashness of the resort and take in a show, as a complete contrast to end the holiday.  It worked for us, and it's not really that far out of the way.
