We have only ever cancelled a site once, and we did that on the advice of the owner a couple of years ago when they had heavy rain, they said they would rather us come for our first visit and have good memories. We had paid a deposit and they did offer us to use that against another booking in the same season, sadly our holidays were booked for that week and all other holidays accounted for so we were unable to visit another time, had it been carried over to the next season we would probably have gone another time, as it happens we've not booked to go there again.

I don`t think that you are ripping people off by asking for a deposit.

I personally think that any site should ask for the first nights money as the value of the deposit.

as we tend to visit either big sites or use ready tents abroad, we are used to paying a deposit and balance in full 8 wks before departure.

I don't mind paying a deposit to a site at high season or if it was as small and popular site which was likely to be full or turning people away.

At Warcombe Farm last year we had to pay all our money up front 4 weeks before we arrived even though it was a very large site and low season. I wouldn't do this again or even pay a 50% deposit. They also had a strict no refund policy which I also didn't like. Imagine paying for a fortnight up front then finding you really didn't like the site or pitch when you got there.

I would always call if I couldn't make a booked pitch but appreciate not everyone would.

Low or zero deposit is now on my list of must haves when booking a site - we only go for a week or a fortnight and mostly in low season. We're off to Lowtrow Cross for a week at Jubilee and they only wanted £25 deposit for the week which I think is fair.

Looks like many of the sites in Wales are more trusting and follow Fforest Fields example. Maybe they don't often have to turn people away because they're full.

To the poster who indicated people know a bit more what the weather will be like 5 weeks before they arrive, can you tell me what it will be like Jubilee Week please

Personally I like paying a deposit if it gets me a pitch. There are a number of sites that don't take bookings or deposits and then have no spaces when you turn up, which is connsiderably worse.
