I think a lot of the visitors here have antiquated views of modern farming. It is these days very mechanised and highly intensive. Also the idea that a farm is a contiguous piece of land with the farmer living in a quaint farmhouse in the middle is outdated. Most of the farmers I know have very fragmented farms with parcels of land all over the place being sold, bought, rented and sublet. So there’s no guarantee that someone passing in a landrover is actually the landowner!<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
I am well aware of modern farming methods, it's something I take an interest in!! I don't think it's unreasonable to refer to someone in a Land Rover who has clearly gone over to a field of animals as "the farmer". Next time perhaps I should flag him down and ask him to fill in a short survey? He or she could educate me on modern farming methods while they're at it!
