It amazes me that people are prepared to spend money for a large tent but are not prepared to pay the premium price to pitch it.

If those same people had a small tent would they be happy paying the same pitch fee as someone with a huge tent?

I'm quite happy to pay for a larger pitch and this is always a consideration when booking a site.

there are sites that can and do accommodate large tents then there are site that in no way could they accommodate them just due to the lay of the land its a choice ! Always on perfectly flat manicured site where large tent sits perfect and is easy to erect and obviously pay the price and have to book well in advance or as we did this weekend pack and go late Friday with no pre booking just get there pays £34 for 2 nights for four of us . No worries no hassles .

The choice to buy a really big tent is a personal one with varying reasons but its also a very good way to get you to part with your hard urned cash buying fluff to fill it with witch if you stick at camping and do more will end up skipped eBay-ed or permanently insulating the loft.

Its kinda like renting a holiday cottage if your a couple and rent a cottage that sleeps 12 its going to cost and seem very expensive but a family group would find it cheep. large tents have there place but don't complain if ts expensive or difficult to find a pitch . i also see it kinda selfish if a couple because of there choice in tent takes what on some sites is classed as a family pitch !

I don't see why sites should increase their pitch sizes just to accommodate some campers who insist on bringing almost their entire home with them when camping.

Completely agree.  It is getting out of hand.  Not only are the tents mahoosive we musn't forget the "outhouse" for cooking in, the toilet tent, the windbreaks, somewhere to park the car.

For those with bigger tents, we are not complaining - if you are happy with your tent and can find sites to accomodate you then all is well and good, but don't expect site owners to change the layout of their park to accommodate bigger tents.

also do not discount that most sites have a licence, that licence is based on the Caravan Sites and Control of Development Act 1960 - largely based on units of that era! yes there have been a few adaptations but not many and certainly none to accomodate the supersize tents that we increasingly see. The licence which dictates the 'law' of what space is required between 'units' hence to increase pitch size = increase legal space = loss of land space to pitch you 'maximum units' on that parcel of land.

If, like us, you don't have the land space for the supersize tents then we simply can't accomodate them or do anything to be able to...

Wondered with all of this talk about large tents - what would you all consider large (some examples from popular family tents):

- Wolf Lake - 510 x 640
- Clear Lake - 510 x 740 (no wider than the tent above but longer (but less likely to need windbreaks etc. out front
- Montana 6 - 530 (with porch) x 585
- Hi-Gear Zenobia - 720 x 240 but if you add the porch that's another 2.5 metres on the shorter side giving you almost 5m
- Kampa Hayling 6 - 380 x 570

Interesting to know what people consider large or oversized (width and length rather than square metres)

For Birchwood Tourist Park, maximum size on any pitch is 4.6m x 6.7m, otherwise 2 pitch fees would be charged.

For C&CC, tents larger than 5m x 9m would need a jumbo pitch.

Just a couple of examples.

Oh God I didn't want to start an argument. We had noticed that when we went camping last year for the first time thinking we had a embarrassingly huge tent for the four of us only to find it was pretty average compared to everyone else on the campsite and we saw a lot if tents bigger than ours, hence our discussion that when we went camping as children the tents seemed much smaller than nowdays, we were having the same discussion about car park spaces and the fact that cars seem bigger these days but spaces have stayed the same size.

We had someone this morning with a 10m x 7m tent, couldnt take them on a hook up pitch because they are too big. Last year we had a family in one tent - 17 people!! I asked twice to make sure i was hearing correctly.

Wisaacs - its not always the size of the tent but the area they take up (if that makes sense). Tunnel tents are much better than the pod shaped, possibly same amount of room in the tent but the shape means it takes up less space of land.

Crowsnest - very valid point - my problem referred above was that I was next to one of the three pod ones which is why overlap of guys onto my pitch.

Rincelex, funny you should say that - a lot of folks would think that having a Kairos 400 for just me and friend is too big!  However, aside from the height of it, it is almost the same length/width as my old ridge tent with storage/entrance area.

That is crazy!   I consider our motorhome big (7.5 x 7.7) so can't imagine a tent that size!!  (must take some putting up?)

Yeah that's what I meant - we have a tunnel tent which is 7m x 5.1m which I appreciate is quite large and would need a jumbo pitch on a C&C site but I've not had problems getting into campsites on. Our previous tent (the main tent) was smaller but with a porch on formed a kind of 'T' shape and would therefore probably have required the same pitch size as the one we have now.

Those tents with the central living space then all the sleeping pods hanging off that must be a problem.

Its an interesting discussion. We have seen tent sizes increase massively in the years we have been camping. When we bought our main tent 4 years ago it was considered pretty big at 6m x 3m but now many family tents are much bigger.

I think tent sizes have increased because we all want to take home comforts with us. Nothing wrong with that but when we first started camping there just wasnt all the "stuff" on the market that there is now. Things like tent carpets, camping cupboards and inflatable sofas are all fairly new ideas.

I think prices for many sites are high enough and if you have a really big tent you should pay extra in the same way that if you have a backpacker tent many sites let you pay less.
