They travel all the way up to Carlisle or Workington to save a few pennies on groceries,...and presumably then fill up with deisel to get back home? Surely not

Surely Yes! its not pennies its pounds! and choice, and variety in shops, sometimes people want to buy other things apart from "outdoor stuff" which Keswick very definatley do's not cater for!

By the way thanks for the Riff raff status! i would dread to think what my neighbours would think if they thought i was a snob!

The list of places to go you's have all listed (and rated honestly) is UNBELIVEABLE!!

We never really knew there was so many 'hidden' camping and caravan sites out there.

All you seem to get these days, is the 'big guns' ramming their sites down your throat just after Christmas  

So off putting.  

We don't 'do' big - should I say 'greedy' - commercial sites.

It largely depends what you are after for a holiday. Yes North Lakes offers great walking and with Ulswater not being too far from Penrith you can have a ride on the "Steamers", but I would advise not ruling out what can be found within an hours drive of Kendal. The Trough of Bowland, Kirkby Lonsdale, The Yorkshire Dales (Reeth), Arnside and Silverdale areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, a bit further afield takes you to Wastwater, The passes of Wrynose and Hard Knot are a fantastic experience. These are just a smidge of what is on offer in South Lakeland/ North Lancashire/ West Yorkshire and should NOT be discounted, but wherever you end up you are sure to enjoy your holiday :-)
