Thank you we are considering doing it in 1day, with a very early start from home. Is Sunday any better to travel on than a weekday? Our first day off work is a Saturday but will probably use that to get sorted and packed up and then travel on the Sunday.

Sunday is usually quieter though you will meet up with those going out for lunch/pm and the bikers (they all tend to gather around Tyndrum.

Speaking as a car driver not towing, I and others work on 2 hours to the Erskine Bridge from Oban which would make Lobey's reckoning of 1 hour 40 from the Stoneymollan roundabout correct.

Don't know if it's any help to you as I wasn't towing but weather was atrocious so max speed was 60mph but did Kirkby Lonsdale to Gretna in an hour and 10 at start of November. Also, as a rough guide, it's about 1hour 45 from Gretna to the Erskine Bridge at speeds of between 60 and 70mph.

There's an Esso filling station on your left as you come into Dumbarton - usually reasonably priced for around here!!

We are planning to visit Oban in September. Travelling from West Yorkshire. How long does it take from Southern end of Loch Lomond to Oban using the A82 which is currently our planned route. We will be towing twin axle bailey by then. Confident with narrow twisty bits as go to Lakes quite regularly .

We reckon about 7 hours driving from Rochdale to Oban towing. We have plenty of stops, we try to time one of our syops along the side of Loch Lomond where there is a layby/ lane turn right just north of the Loch Lomond Golf club.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013

After the second roundabout, at the turn off for Helensburgh, there is a lay by on your left which is part of the old main road and has shrubs between the lay by and the main road.
This is the easiest one to use if you are travelling north as it has its own entry and exit.

Look for an old stone road bridge on your right hand side and just passed that you will see a warning "P" sign on your left and the parking area is just ahead about 100yards.

Great advice thank you, we visited the c&CC site on east shore of Loch Lomond a few years ago and were on site early afternoon after a non too early start so Oban should be done in the day with an early start. Steady drive with stops every 2hrs. or so for leg stretch for us and the dog.
