I cant comment on camping site and refunds from prepaid electrity , however we've often come across this when using statics or chalets.

Cards usually come in £1 or £5 we always buy £1 cards, and have found any cards that have not been placed into the meter are refunded. But any cash actually on the meter is left for the new occupier.

We recently used a chalet for a weekend and was warned it used card meter, we declined the offer of purchasing a £5 until we had seen what was actually on the meter. There was £1.75 on it, so we decided to wait and see if we would need a card or not. Due to spending little time in the chalet, we actually left the chalet with 70p still on the meter.

Did you mean a refund of what was on the meter OR refund of an unused card? We've never received/been offered/nor asked for a refund of what was on the meter, but have always received a refund it we produce an unused card ( presume this is because they refund us then resell it)

A refund of what was on the meter but put back on the card.

Any unused credit on the meter can be put back onto the card instead of being left in the meter - for the sake of, say, less than a quid it probably wouldn't be worth bothering about and could be left in the meter for the next person to use that pitch, but a reasonable amount can be put back on the card via the meter, in which case you would expect to have that amount refunded when handing back the card to reception.

No, plastic like a credit card.

The warden's bro-in-law told me that as I go there so often, if I had any credit left on the meter and didn't immediately want my £10 deposit back for the card I could put the credit back onto the card and keep it for the next time I'm there, then I'll have electric straight away. Good idea, and I would probably have done that but I'd used all my electric up by the time I was leaving so just took the card back and got my deposit returned. That's why I never thought about any unused credit being refunded - or not - until the op questioned it.

ah ok am with you, I have the same sort of card for my trips to the LMA in London. I load it up with money and use it for photocopying, and any credit on it I take with me on the card for the next time.

So what happens to the credit if there is any left on the card once handed back? the next person the card is issued to get a bonus? or are the cards wiped clear inbetween meaning the owners get the extras??

Very different to the meter cards we've previously used, always cardboard and marked once inserted into meter, so cant be reused to taken back for refund. We could only ever get a refund on an unmarked card.

Not sure, but I think this is why the op felt he was being ripped off by not being refunded. I can't see the next person getting it as a bonus though!

I would assume that any credit on the card will be left on, which will ultimately benefit the site owner. So say I put £5 on the card but only use £3 of it and don't get a refund of the other £2, then the next person to book in wants a card with £5 on it - the warden will charge that person £5 but only put £3 on the card, thereby making a profit of £2 for the site.

Now I'm not saying that's what's happened here in the op's case, it could have been a genuine mistake or a lack of knowledge with the system being so new, but if the op does write to the site owner and complain about the non-refund it will be interesting to know what the response is.

This was the first time I've ever used pre-payment ehu and having used all my credit up the question of a refund didn't arise for me anyway, but if I ever come across it again at another site I'll make sure to ask what happens to any unused credit before I buy it.

In reply to Jakers.

Yes we complained about the facilities back in 2012 because the toilets had no roof on. I made a note about it on here. On a different occasion whilst on a day visit to the town took a walk to find that this had been fixed. Hence our return.

On this visit we are talking about a different toilet block. One we had not used before. Excrement stuck to all three male toilet bowls for the three days of our stay and only toilet roll for one of the three days. Thank God we took our chemical toilet. There wasn't anyone around to complain to and since we had had the kerfuffle of finding someone to check in with and then to buy electric from, we decided to use our own facilities and spend time on our holiday. However I believe that a responsibility of the site is to come and clean their facilities at the very least daily. After all I saw someone empty the bins each morning so the site was staffed.

I asked at the time of purchasing the electric if I would be refunded any unused credit and was told that no because he didn't know how to do it. So I didn't ask again and waited to see if it was offered by the different warden we checked out with.

And finally not everyone wants to have face to face confrontations and complain loudly.

Thank heavens we have this forum that allows us, the fee paying customer, to have a voice.

My partner has enquired with Ofgem.gov.uk regarding how to find the correct legalities regarding this subject and will be happy to let you know what the outcome is.

I just want to add that even after everything has been said on this thread, I love the place and just hope that we can clear these matters up.

Personally in your situation I would have addressed your concerns, at the time, with the site or its agents. As a site owner I would want to know what was going on on my site, otherwise I have no chance to fix it suitably for the enjoyment of my paying customers. It doesn't have to be confrontational in its approach, maybe an enquiry type statement - " are your toilets cleaned daily as I have noticed human excrement on the walls?" maybe to the person emptying the bins???

With regards the electric resale no need to go to ofgem here's a post of a few weeks back that tells you all you need to know - altho (in defence of the site you speak of and I have no idea which one it is) it sounds like it was just simple human error, again maybe a reminder to the 'different' warden on departure would have given a chance to make it right at the time?   Just as a note if you were overcharged by more than £5 of electric, you are entitled to a refund if not then the site has no reason to refund you. here's the link:

ukcampsite electric reselling thread

I have to say that if sites don't get told at the time of what is going on, they are often powerless to address the issues. Larger sites are often more busy with different staff etc so prehaps it needs to be a two way communication ( not loud or confrontational) between customer and owner(s)/warden(s) for the benefit of everyone onsite...

Thanks for the link Jakers I knew it was there somewhere.

We will though wait for the reply from Ofgem because there is mention of estimates of usage which is confusing. I would like a specific answer to my specific question.

I just want to be clear. The excrement was in the toilet bowls and not on any walls.

Just wondered if there was any update to this. Did you contact the site owner about the non-refund, and what was the reply if you did?
