Having lost our dog for an hour when she went after deer in a dense conifer forest, I agree it's essential for the dog to wear a tag - landline number on one side, mobile number on the other, never the dogs's name. We were able to reunite two springer spaniels with their owner after they had run off, only because they had tags.
