Just bear in mind that if it rains, you might not hear owls. They don't fly in the rain (their feathers aren't waterproof). I don't know if that means they don't whit-whoo though!

We have lots in our garden that make all sorts of noises. From comical traditional whit-whoos, so exaggerated it sounds like someone is imitating an owl, to screechy sounds that sound like someone is being killed (we check..).

Hope you have a lovely trip.

I love to hear owls when we're camping!

We have just returned from Hillcroft Park in The Lake District (review will be submitted) where I heard the twit twooing of an owl on one night, then the screeching of an owl another night; magical!

The other sites where I've been lucky enough to hear owls are Studfold (near Pateley Bridge, North Yorkshire) and High Rigg Farm (Dalby Forest, North Yorkshire).

Hear them most nights on the campsite we stay on most of the time, I've also seen barn owls flying about also seen what we have been told are buzzards flying overhead, the site is Whitwell & Reepham station just outside Reepham, Norfolk. About half way between Norwich and Fakenham

Well, here we are at Setthorn campsite in the New Forest and last night we were treated to a concert if owl calls - it was fantastic. Thanks to all for your suggestions!

I thought of you the other night, Annetax. I was having trouble sleeping, and could hear a tawny owl as clear as anything from my bed!

I was quite surprised, as we're a good half mile from any woods, although very close to open countryside. I heard it again this morning, about 5.00.

I would let you camp in our back garden but the wife would play holy hell :)

We have..barn owls, tawny and little owls...

The tawny owls are the noisiest !! Especially when young are taking their first flights...

Some great sites in the Yorkshire dales...

Get near woodland , or on the edge of it for best sighting
