Those ball launchers are a pain in the rump on our local park. Not only do the people using them take up half the open space because they sling the ball for hundreds of yards while their (sometimes huge and numerous) dogs go belting after it, but my dog wants to belt after it as well so starts pulling on the lead.

At one time people were content to toss a ball a few yards and get their dogs to bring it back. Nowadays walking across the park is like standing in front of a tennis ball launcher gone berserk...and in many cases the owners have to go and get the balls themselves because having chased the ball their dogs just sit there with it waiting for it to be relaunched again.

I am all for people (and dogs) having a good time but I get very hot under the collar when an individual's good time invades my space and peace, whether it is loud fireworks in neighbours gardens or packs of dogs running across my path chasing a ball that has just zinged past my ear at 100mph.

We stayed at Ross Park in Devon a few years ago and they have the most impressive dog-walking area you will ever find. About 4 acres of fenced parkland with trees solely for the dogs, and if I remember correctly there was even an area for showering and drying the dogs if it was wet.

Dogs should be on a lead on site. Some people are afraid of dogs and many are not well behaved or controlled off the lead.

Dog walks are an area for dogs to defacate (and cleaned up) . It's the dog owner's problem to find somewhere to let it off the lead if this is necessary.

Remembered this post when I was walking the dog at the park today.
A guy was using one of those ball launchers and the ball went a good distance , the dog ran to get the ball and when it reached the ball, it decided to do its business.

The guy made his way towards the dog and was looking for the "business" but needle in a haystack springs to mind as he had been that far away and the dog had ran further away by the time he got there! Why did he look surprised, did he expect the dog to point to the offending "pile"?

I have seen this happen a good few times, sadly the children play football in several areas of the park..

While on site at Arisaig last year there was a couple with a pack of 6 or 7 Collies that were walked along the beach twice each day.

When they were on the beach, everyone else retreated to their units and I mean everyone, children, adults, other dog owners and non-dog owners.

Fortunately the Collie Owners had sited their van next to the beach so we didn't have this mad pack running through the site, but this number of unleashed and out of control hounds caused panic whenever they appeared.

Quite apart from the ethics of where and how dogs should be walked, anyone who upsets other site users by their selfish attitude towards them should be asked to leave the site.
Caravan Sites are there for the enjoyment of everyone and no one should feel threatened by other users or there offspring or pets.

We have two dogs, a Labradoodle F1,(Mongerel) Lab mum, standard poodle dad, and a Pug x Chauwauwa,(Mongerel) the loveliest dogs to us and others they know, and they love to play with other dogs they have got to know, but they both go back to instint, to protect us, if they feel threatened, from other dogs, not people or children, how they know when they are threatened, is beyond me. Its all about the Alpha male/ Female thing i suppose.
If the sign says , dogs on leads, do it. Saftey for all dogs, just wish some cl site owners would do the same.

I think if your dog does not annoy or go for other dogs and will answer to recall then fine but to be honest these type of dogs are in the minority!

I live 20 yds from a large park and our dog is walked there 3-4 times everyday. I keep her on the lead as she would run up to greet people with there dogs and a lot of people/dogs do not like it, myself included. My dog has been attacked a couple of times whilst on the lead by dogs off the lead, some owners have screamed at there dog to stop or come back to no avail and some don't even bother and let their dog run wild!

I had an agrument with an owner the other day for this very reason. His dog was off the lead and I could see it running towards us from 20yds ori

so away and the owner did nothing. It had a go at my dog and I had to lift my dog up rather than give the other dog a swift boot!!! I am an animal

lover but will also protect my dog if need be, when careless owners allow

there to dogs to run wild and attack others.

i too have a border terrier. Mine is only 15 months old. She hasnt a nasty bone in her body. Like yours she has to be kept on a lead in public places as wants everyone to fuss her! She loves everyone and everything!
The last time cost me £200 in vet bills.

We had some words and he spent the time asking why my dog "had" to be on a lead???
Obviously an idiot who should not be allowed to have a pet.

My dog is a 6 year old Border Terrier who is a really sociable character with other dogs and loves childen as she has been well socialised from a puppy.

I have said on here before, I wish I had a pound for everytime I have heard an owner who's dog was off the lead say.. "Oh! he's never done that before" after having a go at some poor dog!

As I say not all dogs are like this when off the lead but they are on the increase in my experience of having/being around dogs for 50+ years.

I take my dog to quieter areas and also use the beach at times when it is likely to be less busy and let her off the lead for a good run, I don't find that a problem.

Children and dogs..you have to take responsibility for their actions!!
