CCC members get a 15% discount at Forest Holidays sites. This can't be given with age concession rates but can be taken with mid-week rates. That should be £3.15 off but comparing family deal prices seems to equate to £3.00 off.

I once camped in a Forest site and I wasn't ask for any proof of C&CC membership so I am not sure what the connection is. I am aware that C&CC members get a discount but I believe I obtained an age concession and paid the same as a C&CC member...so can't all be bad.

Wasn't too impressed with the quality of the pitches but if you camp under trees you can't expect plush grass...and at this time of year be prepared for falling leaves, twigs, lumps of timber, insects, bird poo, seeds and sap landing on your tent...oh, and in the New Forest...wild ponies!

Bit of a problem with Camping in the Forest's website is that as you have to look up tariff by site. Last time I looked up their Glenmore site 2 years ago when not a CCC member, I was so confused I rang the site. The pitch was grass only, solo camper with dog 2 nights at w/end. Dogs get charged extra. I ended up with no charge for dog, a discount for being a solo camper and a bit off for my age - it roughly equated to 19% off! I forgot about being UKCS and their discount so can't say what it would have been.

My personal view, based on the fact I'm a solo like you, Bob, is to forget online booking and ring the site itself. If you don't like the charges, you can at least say, no, sorry, too expensive or whatever or yes, great, good deal and ask them to email to confirm details and booking.

I'm now back as a CCC member and never book through the online system, just ring the site I want to go to. Apart from about seven years ago, I've never been let down on pitch location or price. Murphy's Law says I've jinxed it now!!

Being a tight fisted so and so I always ring sites and ask if they have concessions. Most will knock a couple of quid off even if they don't advertise concessions but some are as tight fisted as me and won't budge on price. There are one or two sites I would love to go to if they dropped their prices slightly but I refuse to pay inflated family prices when there is just me.

When I was a member of the C&CC I found it was costing me more than using non club sites. This was mainly because having paid the membership fee I couldn't find enough club sites which were in places I wanted to visit and so I still had to use non club sites. I also lost a deposit when the weather turned bad within a couple of days of going. You have to book sometimes weeks in advance to guarantee a pitch on a C&CC site and pay a deposit, then take the risk that there isn't a hurricane on the day you have booked because they don't return deposits due to bad weather or give credit notes.

That isn't so much of a problem for wheeled units which are not in so much risk from the weather.
