I think it is always best to speak to the manager or other person responsible for the site and ask them to speak to the trouble makers.

It never works having a go yourself and it will make it harder for the manager to sort them out.

If you stick to family orientated sites, you will have no trouble. The management just cannot afford to alienate family customers and will very quickly deal with the problem.

However, some sites are not family orientated and will have these sort of people on site.

You should be able to tell from reviews and the sites brochure/website etc.

The site we were on has always been fine in the past, I'd have never had any hesitation taking kids there. I agree that it's best not to get into conflicts with other campers, but it seems like overkill to go straight to the manager about something like loud music without giving the culprits an opportunity to turn it down when you ask them politely. If they don't, then the manager needs to get involved. Unfortunately in this case, that didn't happen.

I think it is a real shame that you've had this experience, starr, why some people seem to think it ok to inflict their unreasonable levels of noise on others and effectively spoil their stay on a site is beyond me.

It has happened to us once or twice, last year a family on a site we were on was asked to leave by the owners, after being very noisy late at night, after midnight, and then aggressive with people who complained and very politely asked them to keep the noise down. We also spoke to the owners the following morning, and I was impressed with how swiftly it was dealt with, and would consequently go back despite one night being disturbed.

No one wants complete silence on a site, of course, but there is a heck of a difference between chatting and laughing with a bit of basic consideration for other campers, and what you sadly experienced.

It does seem to have become more of a problem in recent years with the huge rise in popularity of camping.

I wish that site owners would make it quite clear on their websites what their policy is regarding noise (and any other rules on their site) and make it clear that they will enforce the rules, and do it!

At least then we could all make an informed choice when selecting a site to stay on, those who want a bit more of a party atmosphere can find sites that cater for that and those who like a bit of peace and quiet in the evenings can be fairly sure that any disturbance is kept to a minimum, but I guess site owners often don't want to limit their clientele so unlikely to happen.

Its a shame that is the case though, because if reviews are left about a site that makes it clear that the owners aren't acting on noise nuisance, word soon gets around and people are put off going to a site, so really it is in the owners interest, both on the site's reputation and of course not continually having to deal with complaints and having to turf people off the site who insist on disturbing other people.

I have been to sites where there are strict rules about playing music and noise after 11pm, and have enjoyed them, and equally have been on sites where there don't seem to be rules stated and yet people are mostly considerate, so hard to know how to choose a good site, other than read reviews on here.

I do believe that the vast majority of campers are considerate decent folk, but there is an increasing number who see it as a drunken noise fest, and ignore the fact that other people really don't want to listen to that.

I think the issue is not so much about the actual noise, after all any site could have this issue from time to time, no matter how clear the rules, but it is how it is dealt with, I think its appalling how the site has ignored your email and your concerns, and will be awaiting the publication of your review so that I can make sure never to go there for that reason alone.

I hope your next trip is a lovely fun and peaceful one!

Thanks to everyone for your advice and positivity, I feel slightly less negative about going camping again (and I've been going camping all my life, with all sorts of campsites and facilities or lack of, so it'd take a lot to put me off!). My review of the site has been published, I tried to give some positives as well since we've always had a lovely time there before, but I think it's important for people considering staying there to know that the management can't necessarily be relied on to deal with any issues. It's a real shame, it was one of our favourite sites and in a location we often visit, but we've been completely put off going back after our experience last week.

I have been following this thread with interest because we too have been to sites where there have been "inconsiderate campers". How people think this type of behaviour is acceptable is beyond me.

Starr, we have been visiting the site for about eight years now, it is one of our favourites and we stay two of three times a year. Only once have we had troublesome neighbours and that was last year. A bunch of young men thought it was a good idea to play football at the front of our caravan. They hit their own caravan many times, they hit their cars and didn't even stop when they had smashed a wing mirror! Only when they hit our caravan and I asked them to find something else to do did they apologise and end the game. An hour later, one of the young lads decided it was a good idea to kick the ball against the back of their caravan as if it were a wall !!!
I did mention it to the warden the next day (the owner was away) but there was no need for any further action as the situation had been diffused and it hadn't spoilt our holiday.
Our experience was trivial compared to yours and it ended without animosity but I always make sure I have a contact number for the owner or warden should we ever find ourselves in a situation where we feel things are getting out of control.

We are due to visit again in two weeks time and hopefully, it will be an enjoyable break. I'm sorry about what happened to you and I hope it doesn't put you off camping.

There were other issues on the same campsite that night (a group of people had arrived in souped up cars and were tearing up the camping field narrowly missing tents)

We had something similar happen a few years ago: drunks racing 4x4 pick-ups round the site at 3 am, driving between the back of our tent and the hedge. It sounded like they were just inches from where I was trying to sleep.

I was terrified, and sat up in the porch of the tent for 2 hours. There was no phone signal, so I couldn't phone the police, and no staff on site. The ex slept through the whole thing.

Some people are just total (insert rude word of your choice).

I would never go to a site that's unstaffed at night now. I know people moan about the C&CC's rules and regulations, but this lot (big crowd, very noisy and drunk, with shouting, fighting and swearing) would have been chucked off a C&CC site by midnight, I reckon.
