...He came out, looked at the map and agreed I was in the right place but suggested I pitched in the corner as far from them as possible.

WOW!
A mature woman camping alone or not... and quite possibly a polite one at that, who drinks out of a china cup... but please tell me you told him to Fe*k off"!
What a poor excuse for a man!

Exactly. I would have told him to eff off my pitch and move his unit.
He sounds like a bully.

Due to the actions of a few inconsiderate tenters I can understand why Mr Grumpy was concerned however telling him ot eff off and move his caravan does not help as it will only confirm his view of those using tents.

I'm sorry, He was out of order. Bullies need to be told where to get off and he was on the op's pitch, telling her where to put her tent.
This is not a tenter v vanner issue. It is a matter of etiquette. I would tell tenters to p off if they were doing the same.
Finally, what did Mr Grumpy have to be concerned about a lone woman in a tent?

Can't understand why you moved. If I was certain I was in the right place I personally wouldn't even have discussed it with him. What gives him the right to tell you to go into the corner of the pitch you paid for out of the way of his caravan? People like that are never happy. If they don't want anyone else around them why don't they pay for all the pitches around them and fence it off with wind breaks. For goodness sake Caravan or tent we are only entitled to the space paid for. Why go camping either in a tent or caravan if your aim is to be antisocial. The very nature of living in a field must indicate that you have less privacy than at home so why go if you don't want to be close to your fellow human beings

Totally agree. I wouldn't have moved, but then I'm a bolshy old mare!

I don't think tenters have the monopoly on inconsiderate behaviour!

I hate camping near vans because so many seem to have the tv on all evening spoiling the peace and quiet, and I find them visually intrusive.

Mucker you're right I do drink out of a china cup - and very nice the wine was too! Next time I might take a glass :-)

If it had been a definitely marked pitch I might well have told him to go forth but as it was just a general grassy area I didn't want to be near him either so moved away.
I'm not averse to telling someone what I think in no uncertain terms but in this instance I was really irritatingly sweet and nice so he couldn't get the argument I think he would have liked but he knew I was taking the p***.
You've only got to spend some time reading the posts on this forum to realise that the majority of campers, whether in caravan, tent or motorhome, are friendly folk and I wouldn't let one self important bigot influence my opinion of others.
